Meet the 2024 ORISE Future of Science Award winners
On Sept. 18, ORISE announced the winners of the third annual Future of Science Awards during a virtual ceremony.?These awards celebrate excellence performed by ORISE participants in the areas of scientific achievement, professional growth, project contributions?and leadership. New this year was an award that allowed?ORISE participants to recognize their exceptional mentors.

U.S. Army DEVCOM postdoc wins Ignite Off! competition
This summer, we hosted our annual?Ignite Off! competition for ORISE participants. The ORISE Ignite Off! showcases the talents of interns and fellows as they share their research through five-minute?Ignite Talk?presentations, where speakers use 20 image-centric slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds.
Michele Branton, deputy manager at the?U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory Site Office, announced the winners of this year's competition during a?national viewing event on Aug. 28.

FDA fellow takes first in ORISE postdoc poster session
As part of the second annual ORISE Postdoc Mini Symposium, 25 ORISE postdoctoral fellows from a variety of federal agencies presented their research during a virtual poster session on Sept. 17. A panel of judges awarded best poster presentation honors, and attendees cast their vote for their favorite poster submission.?

?? Meet Molly Simonis
As an ORISE participant in the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program, Molly Simonis, PhD researches the mechanisms of pathogen spillover from bats to humans, focusing on the influences of phylogenetic relatedness and social contact patterns on disease transmission.
?? Meet Greg Tierney
As an ORISE fellow at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , Greg Tierney used intensity-duration-frequency curves to evaluate the risks of extreme temperature events.
??? Featurecast Spotlight: Reese Tierney
During her ORISE fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , Reese Tierney assisted CDC scientists with several projects, including the development of foodborne illness source attribution estimates, the investigation of disparities in foodborne illness, and the analysis of social and environmental factors associated with salmonellosis.
In 2023, Tierney won the Graduate Student/Post-Master's Award at the ORISE Future of Science Awards, which recognize excellence among ORISE participants.
Tierney went on to join the CDC as an epidemiologist in the Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch.
In this episode, Tierney talks about her award, her ORISE fellowship and how an interest in history led to her career in epidemiology.
National HBCU Week Conference
ORISE staff members Beth White, Ph.D. and Jessica England attended the National HBCU Week Conference in Philadelphia the week of Sept. 15. During the event, they shared information on ORISE-administered programs and connected with representatives from federal agency partners, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security . Additionally, White gave a talk on "A Path Forward Through Imposter Syndrome," with 110 attending the session.
Clemson University Visit
On Sept. 11, ORISE staff members Rachel Ober and Andrew Crain, PhD connected with Clemson University students at the school's?Fall Career Fair and Tiger Pro Night, highlighting ORISE-administered internship and fellowship programs.
Lewis Ferguson Showcase
On July 31, ORISE representatives?Nicholas Walker and Gina Wampler?attended the 2024 student showcase event for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program and the Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Graduate Fellowship in Atlanta. During the event's career fair, they shared information on ORISE with over 200 attendees and met with several current and former ORISE participants.
