Notable commentary came from AKL in regard to border costs, - which have been announced – seeing significant increases - while Air NZ noted challenges from too much North American capacity, leading to contributions in lower earnings.? This month we reflect on the capacity REX had in the market, and show perhaps that it may have been just too much for the market to absorb – even on the magic triangle.

DATA Insight: Was the B737 REX fleet just too many seats to sell?

We’re now one month on from the collapse of REX Airlines B737 operations and as the graph below shows, the B737 fleet grounding has had a considerable impact in their inventory of sales.? Had REX gone to large, too quickly?? With the Boeing’s grounded, the Saab operations are typically less than half of the total number of seats available each month (blue bars).?

REX regional operations continue to fly (shown in the blue bars above), for which many destinations are incredibly grateful.? How long will REX remain focused in just the regions, or is there more opportunities to stimulate new point to point markets in smaller aircraft, once they are out of administration?? Questions of where growth exists now, will be at the forefront of the business over time.? Perhaps a good question to put to REX at the next RoundTable... speaking of which....
