September 2023 Roundup

September 2023 Roundup

This month's newsletter is chock-full of information! Read on to find timely volunteer opportunities, job openings, upcoming events & save-the-dates, and local nonprofit news & happenings!

Volunteer Opportunities

? Timely Opportunity 1: Respond to art and mail from incarcerated artists and writers across the country with Justice Arts Coalition (JAC)! Bi-monthly "ArtsConnects" evenings offer a unique opportunity to volunteer while connecting with incarcerated artists and their work, as well as becoming part of the JAC community. Join their next upcoming evening on Monday, September 11, from 6:30-8pm.

? Timely Opportunity 2: On Wednesday, September 13, from 6-8pm, help Playtime Project assemble their fall newsletters in person at their offices! Alongside staff and other volunteers, they are looking for help with folding, stuffing, and sealing envelopes to be sent out to supporters later this month. Pizza and drinks will be provided! Interested volunteers can reach out to Stephanie Holladay at [email protected]. Year-round, they also offer in-person volunteer opportunities -- see their calendar of upcoming orientation and New Play Ranger trainings!

? Timely Opportunity 3: Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, volunteer with HIPS to pack outreach supplies, organize clothing closet donations, and overall help them run smoothly. It's a great chance to get involved, help out, and have lots of fun! No training is required. RSVP for their next upcoming volunteer open house on September 13 from 6-8pm.

? Timely Opportunity 4: Join Leave No Trace, Friends of Anacostia Park, and the National Park Foundation on September 16 for a volunteer clean up! RSVP for this day of care and celebration for our public lands.

? Timely Opportunity 5: Volunteer for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC's (RMHCDC) 13th Annual Red Shoe 5K Run & Walk on October 8! This is the only annual event they hold to raise funding for their work easing the hardship of children's illness on families. They are looking for volunteers to set up, course marshall, help at water stations, and break down the event.

? Timely Opportunity 6: From one-on-one mentoring to academic support to Bible study, Casa Chirilagua has a wide range of volunteer opportunities working with all age groups this fall.

News & Happenings

?? Congratulations to An Open Book Foundation (AOB) for being named a Library of Congress Literacy Award honoree! As part of its Literacy Awards Program, the Library of Congress recognizes organizations that provide exemplary, innovative, sustainable and replicable strategies to promote literacy and reading. We are thrilled to see AOB as one of the 15 organizations honored on International Literacy Day, alongside other national and global organizations!

??? "We’re seeing a lot of increases [in rent]," Ingris Moran with Tenants and Workers United (TWU) told DC News Now. "Where will that money come from if the wages haven’t increased yearly?" TWU and local advocates are urging local governments to invest in housing, specifically for low-income families, in the face of evictions exceeding pre-pandemic levels in parts of Northern Virginia. Learn more on DC News Now.

?? The Dream Project's founder and students were recently highlighted in Matt Mendelsohn's piece "The Dreamers Next Door," which looks at the presence of Dreamers who have made their home in Northern Virginia. All of the students profiled in this story received either financial or academic assistance from The Dream Project, which has awarded nearly $1.4 million in scholarship funds to some 340 students since its founding. Hear from them in Arlington Magazine.
