Until now, DoD innovation has been an uphill battle. Lack of coordination leaves projects stuck in the Valley of Death, holding the DoD back from innovation excellence. But the tides are shifting. Recent policy changes and current events indicate that it’s time for a new era of defense innovation—one that brings proven methods to bear on the Department’s toughest challenges.
Last month, Productable team members Rachel (Kuhr) Conn, Bill Waynick, and Tyler Steinke joined a coalition of colleagues across the corporate and defense innovation ecosystems to draft a whitepaper on this very topic. We’re excited to share the finished product with you. Inspired by the @Atlantic Council’s 2023 Commission on Defense Innovation Adoption report, the paper discusses how portfolio-based capability development can empower the DoD to drive the right outcomes faster.
Congratulations to all members of the Innovation Portfolio Coalition on the launch of this exciting project! Please read, comment, share, and let us know what you think. To access the whitepaper, visit www.PortfolioCoalition.com.
??? Building in public
We’ve been hard at work over the past month releasing features to help teams de-risk new initiatives and accelerate the right outcomes. One of the highlights? Blueprints (beta)!
A Blueprint is a digital workbook designed to advance projects to the next stage of development. By walking innovators through corporate best practices like problem analysis and concept validation, Blueprints take the stress out of solution development and help your team get unblocked faster.

It’s conference season! Over the past month, our team has been on the road participating in incredible events ranging from Fed Supernova in Austin, Texas to DAFITC in Montgomery, Alabama, and the Air and Space Forces Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland.
Along the way, we’ve been so fortunate to connect with innovation leaders across the corporate and defense innovation ecosystems who are embracing portfolio-based approaches to capability development and decision-making.
At each of these events, we’ve enjoyed playing Productable Plinko as a fun way to simulate the value of a portfolio mindset. Plinko is a simple game, but it proves a powerful point: you need to take multiple “shots on goal” to achieve strategic outcomes.
