September 2020 Issue of Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research

The 2020 September issue of Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice & Research is now available. The issue contains 5 extremely exciting new articles including one COVID-19 related study:

Leading in an unprecedented global crisis: The heightened importance of versatility.

Pages 135-154. Kaiser, Robert B. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000186

Summary: The coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic created an opportunity to compare the effects of versatile leadership in pre-crisis and crisis conditions using a quasi-experimental design with matched samples in a naturalistic field study. The results indicated positive relationships between versatile

leadership and multiple measures of effectiveness in both conditions, but significantly stronger relationships with team adaptability, team productivity, and overall effectiveness in the crisis condition.

Wisdom Paper

New findings on the effectiveness of the coaching relationship: Time to think differently about active ingredients?

Pages 155-167. de Haan, Erik; Molyn, Joanna; Nilsson, Viktor O. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000175

Summary: This Wisdom Paper critically reviews two recent, large-scale, randomized controlled trials in executive coaching, to drive further exploration into the topic of the coaching relationship as a predictor of coaching outcome. Contrary to previous consensus, it seems the working alliance between client and coach is not strongly related to coaching effectiveness

CONNECT?: A brain-friendly model for leaders and organizations.

Pages 168-197. Hambley, Catherine. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000187

Summary: This article highlights the aspects of brain science that are most relevant to our consulting clients by introducing the CONNECT ? model - a framework for consultants to identify behaviors and strategies that they can incorporate into a “brain friendly” toolkit into their work with clients. This model is an attempt to apply what the science tells us about how people are “wired” to connect with others and what happens cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally when social needs are met or are threatened.

Organizational climate for climate sustainability.

Pages 198-222. Magill, Matthew S.; Yost, Paul R.; Chighizola, Bryn; Stark, Alice. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000163

Summary: This study explored the extent to which individual motivation and organizational climate are related to proenvironmental behavior. The results suggest that both individual motivation (R 2 = .18 to .45) and organizational climate perceptions (R2 = .07 to .49) are related to proenvironmental behaviors inside and outside of work.

Dialogical coaching: An experiential approach to personal and professional development.

Pages 223-241. Pugh, Matthew; Broome, Natalie. https://doi.org/10.1037/cpb0000162

Summary: Coaching practice is dominated by discussion. This stands at odds with theories of cognition and adult learning which emphasize the importance of experiential processes in stimulating beneficial changes in thought, feeling, and behaviour. In this practice focused article, the author makes the case for an integrative and experiential approach to coaching which is informed by dialogical self-theory (“dialogical coaching”).
