The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea sends its deepest condolences to those affected by the tragic incident in Itaewon on Saturday, October 29th. Many young lives were lost and our thoughts are with their families and friends, the injured and all affected.

In keeping with the official mourning period, the AustCham Korea report was delayed until today. We thank our members for their understanding during this time.

AustCham Hosts Senior Level Delegations

It is without a doubt that the past two months of September and October were some of the busiest the Chamber has ever seen, with several senior-level government delegations visiting Korea.

During this time, AustCham Korea:

  • Supported the Government of Western Australia for their Renewable Hydrogen Networking event, attended by the Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC, Minister for Regional Development; Agriculture and Food; Hydrogen Industry.?[Click for full article]
  • Supported the South Australian Government program delegation, including SA-Korea focused Hydrogen conference and cocktail reception at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Events, Events, Events!

During September and October, AustCham Korea had the opportunity to host and support a range of events with the focus of reconnecting the Australian, Korean and broader communities.

On Friday, October 7, 2022, the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AustCham Korea) hosted their largest major networking event of 2022, Taste of Australia 2.0.?Supported by Premium Sponsors Australian Made, Investment NSW and Woolworths, and Event Sponsors the Australian Embassy in the Republic of Korea, South Australian Government, Trade and Investment Queensland, Pepper Savings Bank and Millennium Hilton Seoul, the event?featured a brand-new menu showcasing Australian Darling Downs wagyu beef, Huon Tasmanian salmon and Coles lamb, paired carefully with a vast selection of premium wines, beers and Australian-inspired cocktails.

On Thursday, September 15, 2022, AustCham Korea hosted the third Pub Night of the year, supported by ANZA and KiwiCham. Australians and New Zealanders gathered at the Workshop in Haebangchon to watch the Bledisloe Cup, an annual rugby union competition originally staged between the national teams of Australia’s Wallabies and New Zealand’s All Blacks, contested since the 1930s. Guests were treated to complimentary charcuterie boards and Workshop-classic pie specials.

Finally, on October 27, 2022, the Australian, British, Canadian, Indian, New Zealand, Singapore and South African Chambers of Commerce gathered at the Conrad Seoul for an evening of networking and fun.Since 2008, these Chambers have traditionally hosted a yearly night of networking and reconnecting, and the revival of the Commonwealth Chambers Networking Night was highly anticipated following a brief interval due to COVID-19. The night featured a buffet of themed food from across the Commonwealth, including Australian lamb, free drinks and a lucky draw prize where AustCham Korea donated Four Pillars gin.

With 2022 coming to an end, AustCham Korea will be hosting a few more fun events for the community. Keep an eye on our channels for updates.

AustCham Korea's Team Grows

Thanks to the excellent internship programs offered by KOSAF and Griffith University, the Secretariat at the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea has grown to encompass two interns.

With Bada Jeon majoring in International Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, and Harna Fary undertaking a dual Bachelor of Government and International Relations/Asian Studies at Griffith University, both students are passionate about furthering the bilateral relationship between Australia and Korea, and keen to network with the AustCham Korea community.

AustCham Korea and Members Give Back to the Community

Over the past two months, AustCham Korea has hosted and been delighted to share news of initiatives organised by the business community to give back to those in need.

On Friday, September 2, AustCham Korea hosted a special CSR activity: Community Engagement Initiative (Soup Kitchen).?On the day, members from Cochlear, Herbert Smith Freehills, Jost&Co, Millennium Hilton Seoul and Woolworths gave their time to assist?the Seoul Senior Welfare Center (???????? – ?????????) with the preparation and service of meals to disadvantaged community members.

On October 7th, AustCham Korea member Robert Walters Korea held an array of activities on their annual Global Charity Day. Staff fundraised through goodwill activities including animal rescue centre volunteering, plogging, marathon, beach clean-up, mural painting at a children’s welfare centre, and kimchi stew making at a community-based kitchen. Raising KRW 4 million, the proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders for the second year running to support its humanitarian relief efforts in conflict zones and countries affected by endemic diseases.

SamWoo Electronics and SYSKIM Welcome AustCham Korea and Tritium to Ansan Office

On Wednesday, October 26, AustCham Korea's Project Manager, Grace Casley, had the pleasure of being invited to the SamWoo Electronics Ansan office and factory thanks to Tritium. She was joined by Tritium's Systems Design and Integration Lead, Xavier Casley, during his visit to Korea for the CharIN Testival and Conference, Asia.

Founded in 2001 by e-mobility pioneers, Tritium designs and manufactures proprietary technology to create the world’s most advanced and reliable DC fast chargers for electric vehicles.

Thanks to Tritium, AustCham Korea had the opportunity to learn extensively about DC fast chargers, and how SamWoo Electronics is paving the way for electric vehicle charging technology in the connector market.

Catching Up Over Coffee

Between events and delegations, the AustCham Korea Secretariat is always free for a quick coffee catchup with our members and other familiar faces.

On Tuesday, September 13, AustCham Korea had the pleasure of catching up with Pip Butler, the Global Talent Officer for Hong Kong and North Asia for the Department of Home Affairs, during her most recent trip to Seoul.

Just the other week, the team also had the opportunity to chat with Mark Watson, Country Managing Partner at Silver Sponsor ERM Korea, about potential collaboration for an AustCham Korea x ERM Korea ESG seminar. Watch this space! The team was joined by Xavier Casley, Systems Design Integration Lead at Tritium.

Interested in being more engaged within the Australia-Korea Business Community? The Joint Meeting between the Australia-Korea Business Council (AKBC) and the Korea-Australia Business Council (KABC) will take place in Sydney, Australia on 29 - 30 November 2022.

The 43rd AKBC-KABC Joint Meeting will see senior business executives, industry leaders and key decision-makers from the Australian and Korean bilateral corridor meet in person for the first time in two years. Hon Simon Crean, Chairman of the AKBC will lead the Australian delegation, and Jeong-woo Choi, Chairman of POSCO and the KABC will lead the Korean delegation.

Tourism Australia's QLD Travel Reality Show Debuts With a Bang

The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Korea is highly anticipating the impact of our Silver Sponsor,?Tourism Australia’s travel reality show, “Bucket-list Travel to the Wonderland, Australia (???? ??, ? ?? ??? ??)”, filmed by SBS Korea.

Tourism Australia has worked in conjunction with?Tourism and Events Queensland?to produce the show. A total of 8 episodes are airing at 9PM, prime time in South Korea, having started on October 27th with great success.

Tourism Australia is predicting the high impact of the show in South Korea, with the star-studded cast anticipated to help increase the destination preference of Australia and make a splash amongst Korean consumers.

ASM signs MOU with Korean Development Bank for Rare Earths Supply Chain

Congratulations to?AustCham Korea's Silver Sponsor,?Australian Strategic Materials?(ASM), and its subsidiary, KSM Metals Co., Ltd, for signing a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Korean Development Bank (KDB) and the Chungcheongbuk-do Province to cooperate in establishing a rare earths global supply chain.

KDB is a Korean state-owned bank and has a mission of establishing and fostering the Korean economy, industries, infrastructure, and the finance and corporate system.

The MOU provides for cooperation in the areas of research and development, investment activities and development of a rare earths cluster in Chungcheongbuk-do, where ASM’s Korean Metals Plant is located.

Mott MacDonald in Forbes 2022 List of the World’s Best Management Consulting Firms

Congratulations to AustCham Korea member Mott MacDonald for being included in the Forbes 2022 list of the world’s best management consulting firms and receiving recognition for their actions to deliver sustainable and resilient engineering projects.

To help business leaders choose from the wide range of consultancies, Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to launch their inaugural ranking of the World’s Best Management Consulting Firms. Statista has established several worldwide top lists in the field of management consultancies, and has conducted such analyses across the U.S., Germany, France, the U.K., Switzerland and Japan. To determine this list, Statista looked at the results of these country-wide top lists and created a top list of the World’s Best Management Consulting Firms. All six top lists are based on a similar methodology and take into account numerous recommendations from consultants and clients of consulting firms. The ranking is divided into 13 sectors—from aerospace and defense to financial institutions—and 14 functional areas—including strategy, sustainability and digital transformation.

Congratulations to AustCham Korea member Robert Walters for being awarded the Consumer Choice Grand Prize in Global Recruitment Consulting for four consecutive years. The 2022 Consumer Choice Award is organised and co-hosted by JoongAng Daily and JoongAng Sunday, and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs.
