Welcome to Game On, a weekly newsletter where I share my journey as a former collegiate athlete, e-commerce operator, husband, father, and man of faith.?
This Week’s Agenda:
Where’s My Head At - Inspiration
My brain is fried this week.?
It’s the holiday season, and the biggest shopping period of the whole year is now behind us. Black Friday & Cyber Monday were successful for Mugsy – biggest year yet thanks to the whole crew. It was a battle - dopamine and stress were at all-time highs throughout the entire weekend.?
Now my dopamine sensors are fried. On top of that I woke up yesterday with a massive sinus infection and a 20% recovery on my WHOOP. (hence the late edition this week). There’s never been a better time to mail in the next few weeks. Logic would say - take it easy and kick back by the Christmas tree for the next few weeks.?
Then I saw this post last night and instantly changed my perspective.?
Instantly changed my mood – Brad Redding is a badass, a fellow Charlestonian, father and founder, and a Hyrox athlete. I couldn’t give in to the sniffles for longer than a day. Game On!
Through high school and college, December was one of the hardest months of the year – peak training season. Swimming season lasts from early fall to mid-winter, with December being some of the hardest weeks of training. We capped off Christmas break with a training trip to Florida over NYE – seven straight days of doubles. Mornings were two hours in the pool at 6am with a one-hour lift or track conditioning immediately after. Afternoons were another two hours in the water. Pure physical and mental torture showing up for 14 practice sessions while the rest of the world kicks back to end each year.?
It was brutal, but in many ways, I’ve never seen the end of the year as a time to coast. So here’s my plan to “separate” as Brad said:
1. 2025 Prep – plans are already locked, travel schedule is set. We’ve already got one new store in the works and should have designs in the next two weeks.?
2. Running – planning to run four to five times a week. Black Friday deals landed me some fresh kicks, so I’ll put those to use. One or two internal runs, the rest easy zone 2

3. No Booze – this isn’t really new, I didn’t drink all of 2023, and have barely drank all year. Athletic Brewing is a game changer
4. Dedicated Rest – rather than take the entire five-week period, Mugsy’s leadership gives the team a solid “hibernation” once we break for Christmas till after NYE. I’ll take those weeks super easy mentally – disconnect from my phone and sparingly check emails
Short and sweet this week – I’ll be back next week with more juice!
Feed the Spirit - Words From God
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare?are?not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ...
Check out?this sermon?from Preston Morrison - I found him on Instagram and his guide to tearing down?strongholds?really unlocked some things in my brain. Previously I've talked about intrusive thoughts, my internal thought patterns of fear, doubt, worry that could spin my anxiety into a tailspin.?
Preston outlines the battles we face, they are not battles of flesh. We don't wage war in the world, but in our mind. The more I listened the more I understood. Spiritual battles are real. The way to fight them? "bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ..."?
The way I've been doing this is straight from the sermon. Any thought, frustration or worry that comes into my mind that gets me stuck, I immediately call it out as a lie, rebuke the thought in the name of Jesus - as it has no basis in scripture, and let it go.?
It's worked wonders.
Movement is Medicine
No recommendations this week - just keep moving. Don't let the holidays break your routine, burn those extra calories with a few walks or lifts. Don't start 2025 with extra pounds to lose.
Who’s Taught Me This Week
Preston Morrison - see above or?here.
My Family - spent way too much time on my Shopify app and not enough with them on Black Friday. My daughters asked why I kept looking at my phone - perfect lesson to put the phone away this Christmas!
See y'all next week!
