Is SEO Worth The Time & Effort?

With the rise of AI and businesses losing traffic from the search engines, we are questioning now more than ever if SEO is still worth the time and effort. Here are a few things to consider when thinking about how much importance you want to place on your SEO efforts going forward.

SEO: A Necessary Foundation

Every website should think SEO-first when creating its structure and content. Even if ranking in Google isn’t your immediate goal, ignoring SEO initially can lead to significant headaches down the line. When you eventually decide to focus on SEO, you may need to restructure your entire website, go back over all previous pages, add relevant keywords, include internal links, and update H tags and meta titles/descriptions. This can be a time-consuming and costly process. Even with the emergence of Googles AI Overviews and SGE, Google need to understand what the content of your webpages are about and basic SEO best practices are still just as important as they were 10 years ago if you want to rank in AI Overviews and in the organic rankings in Google.

By considering SEO from the outset, you ensure that your website is built on a solid foundation that is easier to optimise and adapt over time. This proactive approach saves you from the hassle of retrofitting SEO elements, which can be a daunting task once your site has grown to hundreds or even thousands of pages.

The Benefits of Early SEO Focus

  1. Improved User Experience: Good SEO practices, such as optimising page load times, creating mobile-friendly designs, and structuring content with clear headings, contribute to a better user experience. This not only helps with SEO but also keeps visitors on your site longer and reduces bounce rates and increases conversions.
  2. Higher Search Engine Rankings: By incorporating SEO best practices from the beginning, your website is more likely to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). Higher rankings lead to increased visibility, which can drive more organic traffic to your site.
  3. Cost-Effective Marketing: SEO can be a highly cost-effective marketing strategy, especially if you have a limited budget. While hiring an SEO agency can be expensive, learning and implementing basic SEO strategies yourself can provide long-term benefits without ongoing costs.

When to Focus on SEO

While SEO is essential for long-term success, it’s important to recognise when to prioritise it. Here are some scenarios to consider:

  1. Low Budget: If you have a limited marketing budget, SEO is a great strategy to invest in. Although it requires time and effort, it can yield evergreen traffic if you target the right keywords. Unlike paid campaigns, the traffic you gain from SEO doesn’t stop when you stop spending money.
  2. Long-Term Goals: If you’re looking to build a sustainable online presence, SEO should be a key part of your strategy. It’s about creating valuable content, earning backlinks, and establishing your site as an authority in your niche.
  3. YouTube SEO: If you need quicker wins, consider optimising your YouTube content. YouTube is the second-largest search engine globally, and its videos frequently appear on the first page of Google search results. By targeting your main keywords in your video titles, descriptions, and tags, you can gain visibility more rapidly than traditional website SEO.

Short-Term Marketing Strategies

If you need immediate results, SEO might not be the best strategy for you. Short-term marketing efforts such as influencer marketing, social media ads, or Google PPC (pay-per-click) campaigns can provide faster returns. These methods allow you to target specific audiences and generate traffic quickly.

The AI Evolution in Search

With the rise of AI in search engine algorithms and platforms like Google’s Gemini integrating AI to provide more accurate answers, the SEO landscape is evolving. AI can help create better, not just faster, content. While AI tools can streamline content creation, it’s crucial to focus on quality. Google’s algorithm updates penalise low-quality, AI-generated content. They consider this to be 'scaled content abuse'.

Ensuring that your AI-generated content is high-quality, engaging, and valuable to users will help maintain and improve your search rankings. AI can also assist in optimising content by identifying trends, suggesting keywords, and improving overall SEO strategies.
