SEO - Is it still important?

I stumbled across an article this morning asking the question "Should SEO play a part in your digital marketing strategy?" It interested me because surely nobody is asking that question! I read the article and I was pleasantly surprised, the article was fully in support of SEO.
The problem for me however, is that the question was posed in the first place, surely businesses understand the value and importance of an effective SEO strategy? If you don't know the importance then let me highlight some stats below:
Google gets over 100 billion searches a month worldwide.
90% of B2B businesses that are online use search specifically to research business purchases.
70% of the links search users click on are organic.
Search is the #1 driver of traffic to content sites, beating social media by more than 300%.
SEO leads have a 14.6% close rate, while outbound leads (such as direct mail or print advertising) have a 1.7% close rate.
For Google, 18% of organic clicks go to the #1 position, 10% of organic clicks go to the #2 position and 7% of organic clicks go to the #3 position.
The article I originally mentioned gives 6 reasons why SEO is the most important part of an online strategy, I have listed them below because they are important.
1. It works
2. It's cost effective
3. How will users find you without it
4. Mobile search has changed the game
5. Your competitors will rank above you
6. Increase ROI, traffic and conversion rate are all consequences of the right campaign
I am biased, but only because I have seen how improving your organic performance can change a business. This constantly evolving marketplace is competitive but the most effective way of bringing users to your business right at the moment they search for your product or service.
