SEO News Digest: Google Search bug, Country labels, New features in Merchant Center, New type of ads on Maps

As we jump into July, the SEO world continues to provide us with plenty of news to chat about. So, grab your coffee, and let’s dive in!

Updates

No official updates at the moment, but there was volatility over the weekend .

Search

  • Google Search bug: Not indexing new content (again)

On Tuesday, there were issues with indexing new content . Google acknowledged the problem and fixed it within a few hours. The incident has been highlighted on the Search Status Dashboard .

GSC

  • GSC data delay bug fixed

This comes after the performance reports being significantly delayed at the beginning of the month, which is when many SEOs do their monthly reporting.

  • ‘New owner’ notification bug?

Users who’ve been adding new owners to the Console over the past few days are complaining that Google is now sending them notifications about this, and is doing so on a daily basis. :)?

The issue is currently being addressed.

Interface

  • (test) Country labels indicating where sites operate?

Such labels have been added to snippets. The algorithm is more complex and isn’t just based on TLDs. Hopefully, a separate filter will be introduced for this which will enable users to filter out unwanted resources from their search results.

AIOs

Step 1. Launch Gemini

Step 2. Feed it Google’s “Generative summaries for search results” patent

Step 3. Feed it your content

Step 4. Ask Gemini to analyze your content based on the patent

Pure genius.

  • The dangerous side of AIOs: Acquiescence bias?

AI researcher Margaret Mitchell is actively studying the lexical side of AI questions, which led her to make an important point: even if a query is completely nonsensical and contradicts facts known to Google, AIOs won’t correct the facts but will agree with the user and create a piece of information tailored to the query.

It’s fine when someone is consciously testing AIOs and is totally aware of the inadequacy of their query. But if this isn’t the case, or if a curious child eager for knowledge is playing around with it – you can imagine the potential consequences. We hope Google addresses this issue ASAP.

Ecommerce SEO

  • New features in Merchant Center Next?

These features will give you the liberty to manage your product data better and faster:

  • Attribute rules for fixing similar errors in one go

Tidbits

  • New type of ads on Maps?

Usually, I don’t even mention ads in these digests, but this one caught my eye :?

If your itinerary on Google Maps goes past something like a supermarket that features an ad on Maps, the service will show you a popup with this location and suggest you make a stop/include it in your route. It will even plan a detour if necessary – anything to help you convert from the ad ??

  • Tool: From which locations do Googlebots access sItes??

Dave Smart analyzed his site’s logs and mapped the locations from which Googlebots accessed his site – identified by IP addresses. An interesting observation is that in 80% of all cases, the bot accessed his site from the same city, which is not connected to his business at all.

  • Guide: How to build up E-E-A-T in the eyes of Google

In short:

  • Maximize authoritativeness through backlinks, and
  • Demonstrate trustworthiness, experience, and expertise through content and schema markup?

Read the full doc to learn all the details of the implementation process. It makes sense to spend extra time reading this because the importance of E-E-A-T for sites seems to be growing with every Google update.

  • Sundar Pichai could face jail time

Sundar knowingly oversaw the destruction of evidence that could have been used in court against Google .

  • What AI Engineers should know about Search?

50 facts about the technical backstage of search . The post is useful but needs several read-throughs, so you better read it with a clear and refreshed mind.

  • The creator of the Internet appeals to the United Nations?

With the call to keep the internet open and free . The appeal was signed by Tim Berners-Lee (who invented the WWW) and 36 others who have contributed to making information accessible from anywhere in the world.?
