Is SEO necessary for ranking a website in Google?

Well, SEO is defined as the process of increasing the visibility of your website/app/etc. on search engines.

Asking if SEO is necessary for ranking a website is like asking if going to the gym is necessary for getting ripped, or if studying is necessary to score well in exams, etc.

You get the point.

The answer is, it's possible but very unlikely. There are sites out there that did zero “SEO” but still rank well, but relying on random chance is not really a good strategy. With that out of the way, what is the minimum you need to do to rank your website?

Before I answer that, let me introduce you to three new terms - Technical SEO, On-Page SEO, Off-Page SEO.

Technical SEO is about making sure that search engine bots can properly crawl and index your site.

I won’t go into detail, but as the name suggests, this is a technical task that involves maintaining robots.txt file and checking server logs to see what pages are being crawled or not being crawled.

OnPage SEO:- Involves making sure the bots know what your website is about and each page is about. This is also a deep topic and involves meta tags, focus on user experience and a bunch of other stuff. Here’s a cool resource if you want to dig deeper.

OffPage SEO:- is signaling the search bots that your site is more rank-worthy than your competitors.

OnPage is things you do on the website, then Off Page is things that you do outside of the website. This involves link-building, social media presence, and a bunch of other stuff.

If you’re in an industry that is low-competition, you can rank your site without doing any off-page optimization. When there is no competition, just basic on-page SEO will be enough to rank you at the top.

But if you’re in a competitive industry, then you absolutely have to do it if you want your website anywhere near the first page of search results.
