SEO is Changing: Why You Need to Focus on Simple, Timeless Strategies

Good SEO is timeless: To succeed online, a website must offer a superior user experience as well as high-quality, relevant content. This is the core of our offering at Stepman's SEO: simple, timeless strategies.

Yet, a few recent SEO headlines emphasize a key point: SEO is also always evolving.

First, Search Engine Land, reporting on Google's latest core algorithm update, noted some big, "scary" changes, and Johannes Beus from Sistrix, a company that provides SEO tools, noted the changes are just beginning:

"It appears that this Google Core Update is broader than the last updates. Importantly, there are significant changes after just 24 hours which means we can expect more as the week goes on."

The author of the Search Engine Land article, Barry Schwartz, asked webmasters to post screenshots of their site analytics on Twitter.

Some rejoiced at new #1 rankings and others lamented big losses: "Sadly, my site @web_trickz is impacted by this update," wrote Mayur Agarwal." He added: "Hate it."

Meanwhile, Search Engine Journal posted a recent article on voice search, one of the latest frontiers in search, noting that 80% of voice search answers come from the top three organic results. Though not surprising, this article confirmed several factors that contributed to optimized voice content, like page speed and ease-of-reading.

If you've been following the SEO world for any amount of time, you're familiar with the excitable tone of these types of articles (especially the Search Engine Land article, which reveals a hint of panic).

Over the years, we've read about "content shock" (what we dubbed "The Contentpocalypse") and Mobilegeddon.

In almost every case, though, the predicted disasters never really panned out. Often, for example, when search engines have made changes, sites that have lost rankings have recovered quickly. This latest Google update reversed many losses.

Marcus Tober from SearchMetrics, another SEO tools company, noted:

"It seems though that Google changed some factors to brand/authority too much in March and this is what was reverted. Especially in the medical space like a webmd.com or verywellhealth.com that lost, gained back their visibility."

So what can we actually learn from these excitable articles--if anything?

Of course, it's imperative for any webmaster or SEO to monitor SEO news. More importantly, a good webmaster or SEO must monitor his/her site's rankings, and quickly respond to any dramatic changes.

Webmasters have been doing this since the mid-90s, when the first search engines cataloged the web. Since then, of course, the web has changed the world, escorting society into a Brave New World of invention and societal transformation.

SEO has evolved, too, to help websites market to an increasingly worldwide audience.

Yes, today SEO is often associated with cutting edge digital marketing. But it's important to remember: SEO is based on simple, timeless marketing strategies.

So how should you respond to the latest SEO news? Keep calm and focus on creating the best possible user experience and the highest quality, relevant content.
