What is SEO and How does it work?

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization." It is the process of improving your website's visibility and ranking on search engine results pages. When people search for products, services, or information related to your business, you want your website to appear at the top of the results. SEO helps you achieve this by optimizing your website's content and structure to meet the search engine's criteria for ranking.

There are many factors that search engines use to determine the ranking of a website. To simplify things I'm going to break down those factors into four things:

  1. Keywords
  2. Website optimization
  3. Google My Business
  4. Reviews

1. Keywords

In SEO, keywords are the words or phrases that users enter into search engines to find relevant information. When you are writing copy for your website you will be using key words and phrases other people use to search for you. Those words Google tracks so they can match up what people are searching with your content.

Now you can identify the most relevant and valuable keywords for a particular website or page, and optimizing your content to target those keywords. To do keyword research you can go to websites like keywordsheeter.com or Google "keyword planner" to check what keywords people are searching. Use those words on your site and blog articles to help Google match up your content to what people are looking for.

2. Website Optimization

Website optimization refers to the process of improving a website's structure, content, and performance to make it more visible and attractive to both search engines and users. When you improve the speed of your site, fix broken links, and make it easier to navigate through your site, you are further optimizing your website. There are also things you can do on the backend of your site like updating your page titles, meta descriptions, and header tags. When you are done with that, look into setting up backlinks. Backlinks are basically having other websites talk about you and linking to your website.

3. Google My Business

Google My Business is a free tool provided by Google that allows businesses to manage their online presence across Google, including the search results and Google Maps. You simply search for google my business and follow the prompts to set it all up.

Optimizing a Google My Business listing involves providing accurate and up-to-date information about the business, including its name, address, phone number, website, hours of operation, and customer reviews. This information helps Google understand and verify the business's location and relevance to specific search queries, and makes it easier for users to find and interact with the business online.

4. Reviews

Reviews provide valuable social proof and feedback to search engines and potential customers. When a costumer writes a review on google review, Yelp, BBB, or other review sites, the search engines rank your business higher or lower depending on the review.

Positive reviews can improve a business's visibility and reputation online, while negative reviews can have the opposite effect. Managing and responding to customer reviews on platforms such as Google, Yelp, and Facebook can help businesses build trust and credibility with potential customers, and improve their search rankings by signaling to search engines that they are a trustworthy and reputable business.

To implement SEO, you can use various techniques such as keyword research, on-page optimization, link building, and content creation. By identifying the keywords and phrases that your target audience is searching for and incorporating them into your website's content, you can increase the relevance of your site and improve its ranking.
