Sensory Friendly Everywhere

Sensory Friendly Everywhere

My son and I attended the Small Business Expo in our city. It was a great time to position him to experience new environments and as great opportunity to help businesses understand Autism. As we entered the event space, we immediately noticed that there was an opportunity to provide quiet zones or sensory-friendly areas to help us manage overstimulation.

Here are the best practices to help all spaces:

1. Schools

In schools, sensory zones give students a calm space to manage overwhelming sights, sounds, and interactions. For autistic students with sensory sensitivities- loud hallways, bustling classrooms, or bright lights can be overstimulating. A sensory zone lets them step away, decompress, and regain focus, allowing them to re-engage in learning without feeling overwhelmed.

2. Community Spaces

In community spaces like churches, libraries, malls, or recreation centers, sensory zones provide a quiet haven for people who may find crowds, noise, or bright lights overstimulating. This is especially valuable for families with neurodivergent members or those with sensory sensitivities, offering a place to recharge and avoid potential meltdowns. It encourages more inclusive participation in community activities, knowing there’s a safe space available.

3. Workplaces

In workplaces, sensory zones and quiet spaces that offer employees (and Autism moms) a place to step away from open-office noise, fluorescent lighting, or frequent interactions that can lead to sensory overload. These zones help reduce stress, improve concentration, and allow employees to recharge, ultimately boosting productivity and well-being. Employees can re-enter the workspace with a refreshed mind, ready to work effectively.

In all settings, sensory zones create a more inclusive, supportive environment by acknowledging and accommodating the need to manage sensory input.
