Sensors in Fitness Equipment Get a Complete Workout
Interface, Inc.
The World Leader in Force Measurement Solutions since 1968. The most accurate load cells, torque sensors + strain gages.
Interface’s force, weight, and torque measuring sensors are valuable devices within the fitness equipment industry.??
Utilizing Interface load cells, torque transducers, multi-axis sensors, and wireless systems in the design process and production of fitness equipment is common, whether for in-home use or in professional athlete training facilities. The safety of the user and quality of equipment rely on precision measurements.?
Interface measurement solutions are used in a range of fitness equipment R&D applications, including for treadmills, elliptical equipment, resistance and press equipment, lifting machines, rowing machines, bicycles including electrical and stationary, plus physical training and therapy equipment.
Our sensor technologies are also utilized by OEMs as components within the equipment to monitor performance and provide real-time consumer feedback.
How Sensor-Based Measurements Improve Fitness Equipment User's Experience?
Interface sensor technologies are preferred by engineers and manufacturers of fitness equipment and machines because of the precision, accuracy, range of options, and quality. Read the case study Interface Measures Fitness Equipment With Extreme Accuracy to learn more.
Examples of Fitness Equipment Benefitting from Interface Measurement Solutions?
Measuring Ground-Reaction Forces on Treadmills
A manufacturer of advanced running equipment wants to measure the ground-reaction forces (GRF’s) during a high performance treadmill use. They want to measure and study the user’s foot-strike patterns at different speeds. They also want to be able to record and graph the contact time, aerial time, and lower limb acceleration.
For this R&D project, multiple Interface SSB Sealed Beam Load Cells are installed under a metal platform inside of the treadmill. The runner’s foot-strike pattern data are picked up and displayed when the SSB’s are connected to the JB104SS Junction Box. The total amount of force is displayed through the 480 Bidirectional Weigh Indicator.
Manufacturer Uses Load Cells and Torque Transducers to Protect Users
A fitness machine manufacturer required durable sensors that could easily be integrated into testing their high-use gym equipment. The measurement data would be used to create system that alerted users and operators when the equipment was not functioning properly, preventing injuries of the users. The?sensors chosen for this R&D project were the WMCFP Overload Protected Sealed Stainless Steel Miniature Load Cell,?SSB Sealed Beam Load Cells, and?AT103 Axial Torsion Force and Torque Transducers. Paired with Interface’s proper instrumentation, the forces are measured, graphed, and displayed during the testing stage and used in the overall product development.?Read more about this use case.
Riding with High Performance Bicycle Testing?
Power bicycles are all the rage. The actual design process of every component is critical before releasing the product to the consumer. In this use case, a bike manufacturer wanted to evaluate the functionality of their power pedals. They needed a reliable system to measure how much force the cyclist pushes down onto the bike pedals, and they preferred a wireless system to view testing data. Interface suggested four?Model SML Low Height S-Type Load Cells?be installed within the bike’s pedals. The SMLs are paired with two?WTS-AM-4 Wireless Strain Bridge Transmitter Modules, which transmit the force data from the cyclist to the?WTS-BS-6 Wireless Telemetry Dongle Base Station Dongle?connected to a computer.
