Senses and Stories- Being a Human Witness

Butterflies can experience freedom from the chains of gravity that hold humans to the earth. Butterflies enjoy imbibing nectar. Butterflies have developed advanced strategies to avoid being captured, whether by a curious human child or a hungry bird. If the predator is a hungry bird, the Monarch butterfly has an extra advantage in "its hip pocket!" It tastes bad, because as a caterpillar, it ate milkweed leaves. Decades ago, we had a dairy goat who loved milkweed. Her kids did not mind the taste of the milk, be we humans did not care for it!

All living beings have something that makes us different from machines. Desires. We have an inborn desire to stay alive for our allotted time. Emotions, or simple desires in the case of simple lifeforms, do not arise in machines. Desires are natural, and if they were not accompanied by the idea that we can take action to achieve our desires, whether "we" are a cell in a fungal mycelium, an amoeba, a floating algal growth, a kangaroo, or a human, then life would have less meaning, if it had meaning at all. Algae seek light. Light is good for algae. Basic morals and ethics all come down to the natural order. Stay tuned for more thoughts on the complex morals and ethics.
