Sensationalism Clouds Our Judgment
Last Sunday, the weather forecasters started talking about a coming storm.?The storm was forecast to hit Wednesday during the morning commute.?They put up their maps and showed a massive storm heading our way that was going to dump a considerable amount of snow on our area.?We were told, “Get gas now.?Run your errands Tuesday.”?Some schools announced on Monday they were going to be closed on Wednesday. ?Other events were canceled.?Our son started planning his snow day activities.
Wednesday morning came…NO snow!?We literally had no snow at our house, not even a dusting.?Some communities near us had some flurries; the highest snowfall reported in our area was under one inch. For you non-northerners, an inch of snow does not count as a storm.??We normally don't cancel school over an inch of snow.
For almost three days, we were told to prepare for the coming storm.?It never came.?Fortunately, our son’s school did not close.?He was irritated that his cousins and some of his friends had the day off.
Sensationalism leads to bad outcomes.?Banning assault rifles is not the same as “taking my shotgun away.”?Fossil fuels are not “evil.”?Supporters of the other party’s candidates are not “deplorables.”?And it snows in Cleveland in January.?Let’s have rationale, adult conversations about issues.?Maybe we can start with the weather.??
