5 Gardening Tools Make It Easy for Seniors

Gardening is easier than ever for older people. AARP The Magazine recently featured several cool gadgets that make planting and harvesting much easier, and a variety of them can be purchased online. Amazon.com features many at reasonable prices for *digging, watering, and planting:

  1. The Bear Paws Cultivator Claw. A sharp, durable, and lightweight, features a design that allows for natural movement, which reduces hand and arm fatigue. Because users’ fingers are free, it allows them to pick out rocks and weeds without ever setting them down. It’s high marks on Amazon.
  2. The Orbit 58995 Pro Flo 7-Pattern 14″ Thumb Control D-Grip Wand. For ease of watering, this garden tool is a good bet, and it receives good reviews on Amazon. The device has 7 spray patterns; users can choose from shower, center, flat, mist, full, jet, or cone. The thumb control makes for smooth, easy operation, and it makes controlling water flow simple, reducing hand fatigue, common with some trigger-spray nozzles.
  3. The Thick Kneeling Pad. This kneeling pad is on Amazon and multi-tasks as a garden kneeler and the exercise pad is also ideal for yoga. The extra-thick foam pad is 1.5” thick and will not compress or absorb water, making it great for heavy-duty activities outdoors. It makes a terrific gift at a reasonable price.
  4. The Edward Tools Hoe and Cultivator Hand Tiller. Here’s another tool that makes gardening a little easier. It has a carbon steel blade, and it’s on Amazon. The tool is heavy-duty for loosening soil, weeding, and digging. It has a rubber ergo grip handle and is rust-proof. Note: at least one reviewer reports that it does not work well in very rocky soil, which can bend the prongs.
  5. The Radius Hand Garden Weeder. Award-winning ergonomic weeder has a unique, patented blade designed for optimal performance in all soil conditions. The serrated, reinforced blade slides through compacted roots and earth. It’s Amazon’s most popular hand tool and is featured in a host of publications, including National Home Gardening Club, Arthritis Today Magazine, and The American Gardener.

*I rarely write about tools without first trying them. I relied this time on user reviews and ratings, as well as price. I welcome feedback from those who used these tools or may have other suggestions for gardening tools that have become favorites.
