Sending LinkedIn Video Messages

Sending LinkedIn Video Messages

I love sending private video messages to my connections on LinkedIn. Sending a brief video via LinkedIn's direct messaging service is a wonderful way to build and nurture relationships.

While text messages and voice notes are great, a video message just takes it up a notch.

When people hear your voice AND see your face it makes such a personal connection. Video messages can help build trust and keeps you top of mind.

Of course, it's important to choose wisely about the content to include in your video messages. There's no place for spammy content in videos you send your connections. If you go that route... they won't be your connections for long.

Sending someone a cold pitch or buy my stuff video is not what I'm talking about. Instead, you want the videos you send in the LinkedIn DMs to help you build or maintain relationships.

I have never sent a video message that could be seens as salesy. Instead, I opt for sending messages that simply let my connections know I'm thinking about them. ??

Sample of my messages:

?? Thanks for connecting

?? Happy Birthday

?? Get well soon

?? Congratulations

?? Just a quick hello

?? Thank you for the...

Every message I send is short, sweet, and personalized. I don't have a generic message on hand that I send out to the masses. Instead, every video is custom made for the intended recipient.

I also try to go the extra distance by captioning my video messages.

I caption my video messages because maybe my connection is deaf or hard of hearing. Or, maybe their native language isn't English and they find my accent difficult to understand.

Also, I don't know WHERE they the person will be when they watch my video. Adding captions allows the viewer to watch the video with the sound off. ??

Finally, when a video has captions, the recipient can see what the video is about. Who wouldn't want to watch a video that says, "Happy Birthday"?

?? TIP: Instead of looking at adding captions as "extra work" think of it as an opportunity to practice your video captioning skills.

RECORDING LENGTH

There is a two-minute time limit to LinkedIn Video messages.

When you are recording a video message using LinkedIn's built-in feature... if you exceed 2 minutes you will be cutoff with NO warning. You will then have the option to send the message as is, or you can make a new video.

When you are uploading a pre-recorded video from the camera roll on your phone, you will also be limited to a maximum of 2 minutes. This is the message that appears if your video exceeds the designated limit.

WHERE IS LINKEDIN'S HELP TOPIC FOR VIDEO MESSAGES?

Awhile back, one of my clients asked me how to send a video message on LinkedIn. I quickly discovered the LinkedIn help topic was nowhere to be found.

It seemed odd that help topic went AWOL. Hopefully LinkedIn will add those instructions back again one day. ??

In the meantime, I wrote up my own instructions (see below).

Just so you know, you can ONLY send video messages via the LinkedIn app. While there are workarounds for sending videos via desktop, you can only send a link to videos hosted outside of LinkedIn, like on Loom, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.
