Senator Debbie Stabenow visits Food Gatherers to discuss Farm Bill
Food Gatherers
Food Gatherers is the food rescue and food bank program serving Washtenaw County.
Food Gatherers was honored to host Senator Debbie Stabenow, Rep. Debbie Dingell, and Rep. Elissa Slotkin at our warehouse to discuss the importance of the Farm Bill for addressing food insecurity in Michigan.
During a tour and panel discussion, we shared the ongoing challenges faced by our local hunger-relief network and the neighbors we serve. Neighbors who participate in SNAP are receiving fewer benefits after the end of the extra benefits provided during the pandemic, and food banks are receiving less TEFAP food to distribute from USDA.
As Congress prepares to draft the 2023 Farm Bill, we shared the importance of passing a strong Farm Bill that strengthens SNAP and TEFAP so that people can access food when they need it.
Senator Stabenow also heard from local community members about their individual experiences with SNAP and TEFAP, expressed her support for continuing to support the programs, and shared her commitment to passing a Farm Bill that ensures people have access to meaningful benefits.
Food Gatherers is grateful to Senator Stabenow, Rep Dingell, and Rep Slotkin for their time and dedication to building a thriving, food-secure Michigan!
