Sempre Health Celebrates Five Years of Helping Americans Afford Medication

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has Americans worrying not just about their physical health, but also about their financial health. These concerns, though, are not new, and this ongoing public health emergency has only amplified these anxieties. Although healthcare providers, payers, and policymakers have taken steps to help more people access high quality care regardless of their income, employment status, or location, still, millions of Americans struggle to afford their prescription medications. A large number of individuals even identify the high cost of prescription medications as an issue that will influence how they vote in the upcoming election. Perhaps most significant though, is that due to the high price of prescription medication, an unacceptable number of Americans go without the medications they need (nearly 20%, according to this Health Affairs survey) to effectively manage their chronic health conditions. This number will likely only increase, as financial insecurity driven by the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow. 

In the face of this challenging climate, however, we are seeing novel solutions expand to help more patients afford and access the life-saving medications they need. Here at Sempre Health, we work with health insurers and pharmaceutical companies to deliver dynamic, behavior-based discounts directly to patients. Five years ago, when Sempre first brought dynamic pricing to life by giving consumers the power to reduce the amount they pay at the pharmacy simply by following doctors’ orders, we never could have imagined the impact we have had in such a short amount of time. 

As we celebrate our 5 year anniversary, Sempre is proud to share that, to date, we have saved health plan members over $2.5 million on their prescriptions - prescriptions these members otherwise might not have been able to afford without our programs. And as we look towards the future, we expect to deliver Americans 10x the savings in just this next year than we have in the last 5 years combined.

Unlike traditional coupons, Sempre redistributes pharmaceutical dollars that are already earmarked for affordability support to patients via point-of-sale dynamic discounts offered via their health plans. This enables consumers to share in the same financial benefits that insurers, care providers, and pharmaceutical companies experience when these same consumers make responsible health decisions, like taking their medications as prescribed.  

And because we communicate with health plan members in the channel they prefer—via text message—it gives us the chance to truly engage with members and provide individualized levels of support, at scale.
