01.SIA Applauds Announcement of New CHIPS Incentives
WASHINGTON—Jan. 4, 2024—The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) today released the following statement from SIA President and CEO John Neuffer in response to the semiconductor manufacturing incentives announced today by the U.S. Department of Commerce and Microchip Technology. The incentives, which are part of the CHIPS and Science Act, will support Microchip’s manufacturing projects in Colorado and Oregon.
?
“Today’s announcement will help propel semiconductor manufacturing projects in Colorado and Oregon and reinforce America’s chip supply chains for critical automotive, medical, aerospace, and defense technologies, among other applications. We congratulate Microchip on advancing these important projects and commend the progress made by Secretary Raimondo and the CHIPS Program Office team in beginning to distribute CHIPS incentives. We look forward to seeing more projects receive vital CHIPS funding to help reinvigorate America’s economy, national security, and critical supply chains.”
?
The CHIPS Act’s manufacturing incentives have already sparked substantial investments in the U.S. In fact, companies in the semiconductor ecosystem have announced dozens of new projects across America—totaling more than $200 billion in private investments—since the CHIPS Act was introduced. These announced projects will create more than 40,000 jobs in the semiconductor ecosystem and support hundreds of thousands of additional U.S. jobs throughout the U.S. economy.
02. Bosch, Infineon and five other European and American semiconductor companies have formed a new company in Germany to popularize in-car RISC-V!
?
Four European semiconductor companies, Bosch, Infineon, Nordic Semiconductor and NXP, have joined forces with Qualcomm in Munich, Germany, to form a new RISC-V company, Quintauris, which appears to be inaugurated in August 2023, according to the disclosure, and is currently being prepared for opening.
?
The goal of the new company is to promote the use of semiconductors (SoCs) with RISC-V cores globally by providing reference architectures to semiconductor manufacturers using RISC-V and to develop various RISC-V chips. Accelerate the commercialization of future products based on the open source RISC-V architecture.
?
Quintauris said the company will initially focus on the automotive industry, but will then expand into mobile and the Internet of Things. The company will also focus on driving standardization in the RISC-V hardware and software ecosystem.
03.NVIDIA’s China-exclusive Chip H20 to Begin Production in Q2 by Wistron
?
The US government issued a new ban in October 2023, further restricting the export of NVIDIA's high-performance AI chips, but before the ban officially went into effect on November 17, the US government ordered NVIDIA to apply the ban to "products with a combined performance of 4800 or greater that are designed or sold for data centers". The export restrictions "take effect immediately". NVIDIA also announced at the time, immediately stop the shipment of A100, A800, H100, H800 and L40S products.
?
According to the report, NVIDIA is developing the latest improved AI chips for China, including the HGX H20, L20 PCle, and L2 PCle, which are all based on NVIDIA's H100 improved to comply with the latest U.S. export control policy.
?
Recently, according to a report by WCCFtech, NVIDIA will resume AI GPU shipments in China and begin mass production of the H20 and other AI GPUs in the second quarter of this year.
