The general rule of thumb is that you’ll need a VAT number if you want to store inventory.? So, if you want to store inventory in Germany, you’ll need to apply for a German VAT number first.?
Did you know that you can also use EU single market rules to your advantage?? Even if your customers are located in a different EU country, they won’t face surprise VAT charges when receiving their items!?

Check your EPR obligations
Depending on where your customers are based, you may also need to comply with Extended Producer Responsibility regulations.? Many EPR regulations are already enforced across the EU.??
Germany currently has three different EPR categories available for registration, and you’ll most certainly need to comply with the Packaging requirements.?
This applies to any business that is looking to ship packaged (both product and postal/delivery) goods into Germany.? If you haven’t already, make sure you apply soon!
If you’re looking to sell to other EU markets, there may be other categories – make sure you are fully covered before you start selling.
