SELLING BEING DIFFERENT
(Warning: Too many times the usage of word different)
What makes me the person I am, what is so different about me. I keep on telling others I am different, I tell myself that I am different, I always wanted to be different. But what is different, is there anything different in this world. I have the same fears, the same urge that everyone else has. I feel lonely, I feel sad, I want to do good work and have a comfortable life. I feel jealousy, I feel anxiety and I feel an urgency to achieve something like everyone else. My motivations are feeble and temporary like everyone else, but still, I want to believe that I am different.
This is the era, where everyone wants to break the shackles of stereotypes and wants to be accepting. They claim that they are okay that someone is of any body type, any color, any sexuality, any profession etc. All the campaigns want you to be proud of your individuality and want you to believe that they celebrate the divergent and stand for it. How much is this portrayal true is always questionable. But my question is that what they are showing as different is that different. Systematically calling out certain categories of people, things or choices and terming them as different. So by rational, they had decided something as conventional and now they also have the power to decide what is different, very convenient I believe. They must be guided in this pursuit by some consumer research that indicates that people want to be seen as different, unique and individualistic. So better create things that resonate with this need or at least market it like that.
But again what is so different when we are all driven by the same basic principles of life, love and death. We all want to have a decent life, with lots of love and peaceful death. If someone asks me even today why am I different, I don't have a constructive answer to it? My food liking's, my dressing sense, my actions to certain situations would be different but are they so different, and if they are so different then how is mass production still a thing, and customisation of options is still very limited. So what is this different...which we claim and crave for? I am sure there is something unique about everyone but have we found it, or are we again participating in some convention unknowingly.
