This is not a post designed to comment on recent events surrounding the extension of the ULEZ Zone in London, those that will came into being on August 29th.

I have no comment to pass on Mr Khan nor his policies; despite being born there, London is a metropolis that I no longer recognise, and besides we live in a democracy, it is for Londoners to decide the fate of Mr Khan.

That said it has been fascinating to watch this from afar and in terms of how these ULEZ Zones may then be rolled out to (or expanded within) other major cities in the UK, because there is no doubt that it leaves owners of vehicles not meeting the (no doubt ever more stringent) emissions levels in a bit of a tight spot. In terms of both the vehicle they now decide to own and in terms of disposing of the car that now may be too expensive to own in London or any of the country’s ULEZ Zones.

In truth the policy is just another factor effecting the ever-fragmenting and highly-evolving used car markets in the UK; markets that have always been nuanced but are now becoming ever more highly specialised, in terms of operating within them successfully. And all this coming at a time when the consumer has little access to the expertise required to dispose of their current (non ULEZ compliant) vehicle at “Market” value.

Unfortunately for consumers, the online valuation platforms (the likes of We Buy Any Car, Cazoo, BIG etc.) are becoming ever more disconnected from trading reality (or choosing to be), when it comes to prices across all used car markets. And of course they are, the valuation software they rely on is now too narrow (in terms of the data they collate) to be accurately pricing stock across all used car markets.

And the franchised dealer element of used car markets can’t help that much either; they jumped on board with the tech lead race to the bottom and stopped investing in and/or developing the acquisitions professionals now required, over a decade ago. So don’t go there expecting expertise in the sale/disposal of your car; they (like every other business- mine included) operate in their own microcosm of a market.

Sadly for them, the market now dictated by government policies aligned to the 2030 – 2035 ban on the sale of petrol and diesel models. Plans by the way, that appear to be (rightly – in my opinion) unravelling; albeit without the clarity so urgently required by everyone involved.

Anyway all of this discussion surrounding complex used car markets and the “Drivers” effecting prices, is unlikely to be of any consolation to those living in the now expanded ULEZ zone for London; and owning a car not adhering to the emissions standards required. A car that will soon cost them an additional £12.50 per day to drive off their driveway.

I can do nothing about what they should be purchasing; personally if I lived in the zone I would be more than frustrated. But I can help some of those looking to dispose of their car; in terms of offering routes for disposal, and at prices that will not be matched by others, including all the tech based disposal platforms.
