“Source code is the computer language which sits behind a program or app; it is the game’s secret recipe.
Source codes are generally a closely guarded secret, but with simple games like Pop the Lock or Canabalt, it is often easy to create a clone from scratch by just observing how the game works.
Market places that buy and sell source codes make it easy for anyone to quickly copy a game.
Stav Zilberstein runs sellmyapp.com, a place to go for people who want to make a clone, but do not want to start from scratch.
“You can sell your source code multiple times to a multiple number of people, like an unlimited number of people,” he said.
Stav argues that reskinning games is a healthy part of the mobile game industry.
It is a means for people without the skills to make their own game and get a start.
And he says the source code should be used as a starting point — wannabe game makers should add new features as a way of making their game better than the original.
“The rule of competition is be first or be better, and if you are able to be better then I think it’s completely legitimate, of course as long as you don’t violate trademarks or whatever.”
Stav’s message to independent developers is that if their game is good, they will not need to worry.
“What I can say to the indie devs, is just focus on your product,” he said.
“I mean it’s nothing new that I’m saying here but when they focus on creating a high quality product and they push the marketing strong, they are going to succeed and I think these clones, so to speak … cannot interrupt with their success.”
