The Selfless, Saffron wearing Hanuman

The Selfless, Saffron wearing Hanuman

Hanuman is the symbol of courage for the majority of the Hindus. Hanuman is in fact the most popular deity for the majority of the kids because of the heroic stories attached to him. What really makes the character of Hanuman so popular among every Hindu?

Is it the heroic feats? Or the might that he demonstrated? Or his abilities? Here is my interpretation of Hanuman and what makes him stand out from other Hindu deities. I will also try to chalk down the teachings from this heavenly character. All references are from Tulsidas- Ramayan which is also more popular among the current population compared to Valmiki-Ramayan.

Hanuman was the only character of Ramayan whose personal purpose is not defined anywhere. For everyone else, there was a personal purpose. Hanuman is the only character in Ramayan who does not do anything for himself. He is more concerned about solving a bigger issue which is fulfilling Ram's destiny so that the world gets its benchmark of righteousness.

Hanuman proves to be a fantastic people manager who always leads by example. Extremely focused on all his projects and used problem-solving skills throughout his journey. But why?

He did not wish to rule. He did not wish to be famous. He did not want to conquer for power or wealth. Neither did he wish to go to heaven when given a choice. So what did he want? What was his destiny?

Do you realize that both Ram and Raavan were right in their own ways?

Ram was right since he wanted to bring back his kidnapped wife and set a benchmark for justice for people to follow. Whereas Raavan was right too and wanted to avenge his sister's insult and prove his might to the world. So when no one is wrong, why did Hanuman fight by Ram's side?

I conclude this with, Hanuman had two options to choose from. One, choose Ram who was righteous or two, choose Raavan who was right.

Ram's righteousness was for a bigger cause and a better good for the world to follow. Raavan was right only for himself. This is where Hanuman chooses to side with the righteous Ram to teach the world about values and honesty.

The original Saffron wearing, the selfless Monkey. The bearer of knowledge and power but never used them selfishly. The wise who never thought of attaining wealth or comfort. But chose to side with Righteousness forever to teach values to the world.

That's Hanuman!
