Self Transformation After a Layoff

Layoffs are more often than not a brutal experience for employees and employers alike. Not only can it be mentally devastating to those that were let go, but has a mental ripple effect for those that remain and can severely impact loved ones. Here are some simple things that can help you to come out on top.

?? Talk, Walk, and Breathe

It is important to acknowledge that being laid off is a psychologically traumatic event. Depending on the circumstances and timing, especially in relation to other recent changes in your life, you may find yourself overwhelmed and may need to employ some tactics to cope. If you still have health coverage until the end of the month as part of your severance, consider getting some free therapy sessions while available. This is the perfect time to randomly place sticky notes and positive affirmations around the house, take a bubble bath, go on a picnic, or do some yoga. My guess is that you haven't taken a proper vacation in years and this is the perfect opportunity. Seek and bathe in your local nature, for it will remind you of your blessings.

?? Reflect and Refresh

While it is fresh in your mind, write down two or three sentences summarizing your responsibilities and accomplishments in your latest role. Update your resume, using a builder like FlowCV and upload a new profile photo using a portrait generator like Lensa.

The important thing to do here is be clear, concise and speak to your dream job. Take advantage of the many free online courses, MOOCs, and industry webinars. When in doubt, say yes.

?? Remind and Reposition

If you don't already, search and follow your industry leaders and increase your engagement as comments. For topics that you feel especially passionate about, repost them with a comment or publish an article. Going through this exercise several times a week is a way to boost your self-confidence as an authority in your professional space.

?? Keep Going

Whether you believe it now or not, all things in life are temporary. A key factor in overcoming failure is perseverance. Message people in your network to see who is hiring, and keep asking. Apply not only for your ideal job but also for those slightly outside your comfort zone. Go for that dream job now. Don't wait. Trust me, keep the conversations going, and get feedback, especially if passed over. You are likely to learn something that will help you to better reach your ideal team. This is an exciting time for you!
