Self-Sufficiency is the Way Forward for the Renewable Energy Sector: CII Conference 2022

Recently, CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) organized the?Aatmanirbhar Bharat: 3rd Edition of International Conference and Exhibition. The 3-day event (17th to 19th October) was held at Hotel Ashok in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi.?

The event witnessed insightful discussions on topics such as building global supply-chain resilience, improving raw material supply, and making India a global manufacturing hub in renewable energy.?

Notable personalities from the solar industry, including Dr. Ajay Mathur- Director General of International Solar Alliance, Dr. Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director of Waaree Energies, and Dr. Praveer Sinha- CEO & MD of Tata Powers were also among the speakers.

Here are key takeaways from the event:

1.?India has Entered a Critical Energy Transition Phase

  • Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable energy, R.K Singh, released a report titled: ‘Pathways for Global Partnership in Green Energy: Powering India and the World
  • The nation’s renewable energy capacity has more than doubled and solar energy capacity has expanded by almost 5 times in the last five years.
  • The country’s renewable energy sector can have an economic impact of over US$1 trillion by 2030 and US$15 trillion by 2070.
  • 90% of the RE installations come from 10 dominant states. The top 3 are- Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Telangana.
  • In Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, wind power has become a predominant source of energy.
  • 65% of India’s power generation will come from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, as per R.K Singh.

2.?The Future of RE Manufacturing is Bright

  • As per R.K Singh, India will have a 90GW solar equipment manufacturing capacity by 2030. The current capacity is 20GW, with 15-20 GW under construction.
  • Solar PLI-II, which was approved this September is set to add another 40GW capacity. The bids for the 19,500 crore investment approved under the PLI scheme will be issued this week.
  • Policies such as PLI for solar PV modules, and advanced cell chemistry (ACC) energy storage systems among other initiatives by the Indian government are helping advance the country’s RE manufacturing capacity.?
  • The minister also mentioned the plan to develop green hydrogen manufacturing capacity.?

3.?????India can Become a Global Supplier of RE Equipment

  • Union Commerce minister Piyush Goyal has said that to become a global supplier of RE equipment, India must focus on developing aatmanirbharta (self-sufficiency)
  • The country must maintain the RE supply chain, from the equipment stage to innovation, to lead the world and reduce dependencies.
  • India has been dependent on imports of machinery and equipment in the past, but during the pandemic and geopolitical conflicts, the country faced supply chain disruptions and setbacks.
  • He urges the nation to draw from international collaborations to raise energy security and develop self-sufficiency in Renewable energy.
  • He further adds that focusing on renewable energy would help the industry gain a competitive edge in the global market and increase foreign earnings.?

The CII conference has provided a glimpse into the roadmap towards the nation’s 500GW RE generation by 2030 target. In the coming years, India’s focus will indisputably be on developing manufacturing capacity and achieving self-sufficiency in the renewable energy sector.?
