Self-Reflection: Are We Being the Employees Our Leaders Need?

In the workplace, much of the focus tends to be on leadership. We frequently hear about the qualities that make a "good boss"—visionary, decisive, empathetic, inspiring. But here's a thought: while we are busy searching for the perfect leader, have we stopped to ask ourselves if we are being good employees?

It is easy to place the responsibility for workplace culture and success squarely on the shoulders of those in management positions. We expect them to lead, motivate, and cultivate a productive, positive environment. But leadership is a two-way street. We, as employees, also play a crucial role in the dynamics of our teams and the health of our organizations.

So, what does it mean to be a "good employee" or "good subordinate"? It is more than just doing your job well. It’s about contributing to the overall culture and success of your team. It is about being accountable, communicating clearly, and showing respect to your colleagues and leaders alike. A good employee is someone who not only brings value through their work but also fosters collaboration, trust, and mutual respect within their team.

Before pointing fingers at leadership for any shortcomings in the workplace, we should each take a moment to reflect on our own behavior. Ask yourself these questions:

It’s easy to blame external factors when things go wrong, but a good employee takes responsibility for their actions, deadlines, and contributions.

Clear, respectful communication is the foundation of any successful workplace. Are you sharing information, asking questions when needed, and being transparent about challenges?

A good employee doesn’t just wait for direction. They take initiative, suggest solutions, and contribute ideas to move the team forward.

We all know that team dynamics make or break a project. Are you supportive, collaborative, and open to feedback, or do you undermine others unintentionally?

A willingness to learn, adapt, and grow within your role not only benefits you but also your team and company as a whole. Are you investing in your own professional growth?

The more we each focus on becoming better employees, the better the leadership around us will be. A team of accountable, proactive, and supportive individuals makes the job of leadership that much easier. Good bosses don’t just happen—they are cultivated in a positive, cooperative work environment where every individual takes ownership of their role in building success.

Before we focus on what we need from our bosses, let us first ask ourselves: How can we be better employees? Because at the end of the day, leadership is not just about the person at the top of the pyramid—it is a shared responsibility, shaped by the collective efforts of everyone within an organization.
