Self-Reflection as a Leadership Practice: It’s More than Watching the Bottom Line

An important attribute of a leader is to harness the skill of self-reflection. Not a blame game that creates self-depreciation or that of others. But a time to check in with yourself on how things are going on a day-to-day level. This practice is a means to determine how the work you’re doing is impacting you and how you are impacting the business or your team. Without them, the bottom line is just not achieved by the efforts of one person alone.
Some seek a meditative or prayerful practice. Colleagues of mine will take a walk to clear their heads; they say the quiet and emptiness help them avoid distraction from the everyday noise in their heads. Sometimes there’s simply too much clutter in our minds to be able to gain perspective on the day. No matter what vehicle you choose, do what works best for you.
To enhance or create a simple self-reflective practice, I’d like to offer you the below list of 10 questions you can use.?They have been created with the primary attributes of a values-based leader in mind.
5 Self-directed self-reflection questions:
1.?How am I living my values every day?
2.?Have I been honest with myself today or am I self-deceiving?
3.?Have I fully utilized my talents today?
4.?Did I hold fast to my priorities today?
5.?Am I committed to expanding my knowledge?
5 Others-directed self-reflection questions:
1.?Have I done good today?
2.?Am I an example of the behaviors I want my employees to model?
3.?Have I harmed anyone in the process of day-to-day work?
4.?Am I living up to my commitment to providing opportunities for others?
5.?Where do I need others’ expert help to overcome an obstacle?
That’s it. Ten simple questions. After a few days, you may find yourself doing this without thinking.

2 年The key to self-improvement is consistency, be it working out, on the job, or in everyday life. Working out is easy to track...you either do it, or you don't, and you log the time and/or exercises completed. Self-improvement at work or in life isn't as clear-cut. This list helps break it down and shows you insights into whether you accomplished what you set out to, or missed the mark and how to potentially improve upon it with reflection.
