I grew up in a culture where it is taught from childhood that one should never praise themselves but just improve work and let others notice it to praise. I am sure many of you could resonate with it, well, I also believed in it until I came across the study on Confirmation Bias. The study was thought-provoking and I pondered on it for a while.
Human decisions are biased based on various factors including preconditioning. We tend to believe what we are told multiple times, and it holds good even when we express self-confidence and self-praise. Study shows that projecting self-confidence with some self-praise does lead to positive effect, but only when it is non-comparative.
Yes, it is fine to show off confidence and praise yourself as long as you do not put someone down and do not compare with someone else. Praising your competency seems to be fine as long as you do not claim others are incompetent. So next time when you meet someone do not hesitate to share your achievements and pat your back without comparison, competition, and criticism.
