Self-mastery means taking control of yourself by fully understanding who you are and taking responsibility for your own life. It means accepting the reality and focusing on most of the positive things and improving our nature out of the negative force or challenges. By attaining self-mastery, you can guide your emotions, habits and behaviors. It is a way of responding and not reacting.
Being a master of your mind does mean perfection or selfishness, you have to help yourself to be able to help others. Mastering ourselves is the root for success, independence, peace and the confidence. A common observation you will find with some of the rich people who started from zero, they had to self-actualize, accept the situation and work on their better future.
The application of self-actualization relies on four functions of humanity; the body, heart, soul and mind. Taking control of the above four without being blown by feelings, urges and circumstances is a process that requires patience, self-love, focus and being honest with yourself.
What are the aspects of self-mastery?
Physical
To become masters of our physical being means having the control over our body, its empowering oneself to have consistent and never-ending improvement. The physical part being discussed includes the following components;
? Health
? Fitness
? Nutrition
? Energy and strength levels for optimum productivity
? Quality of sleep
? Stress management
? Endurance and flexibility
We have to push our bodies to attempt something despite the situation using all that is available at your disposal. The combination of the above components of physical mastery will give you the results; are you taking care of your health? Are you physically fit? Do you put enough energy into what you are doing? How do you manage stress? Are you flexible and able to endure the daily challenges?
An excellent example of someone in a war has to learn to master the physical to be victorious, endure circumstances, manage the pressure that comes with war and uses strength appropriately. A more common approach is for people who are aiming to lose weight, they have to push themselves to do exercises, avoid the foods probably they love too much; having to endure and manage stress about peoples comments and opinion if not they may not accomplish the goals.
The physical part engages the mind.
Mental
The power to master our minds is in the inner us; it is engaging our senses to focus or pay attention to what your body is pushing to attain. The brain is the principal participant of implications like anxiety, depression, anger, fear, stress, the feeling of sadness or love, pain among others.
Components that make the mental mastery are;
? Attitude
? Focus
Psychological rehearsal
? Self-talk and goal setting
How you can attain mental control;
The mindset; what are your self-perceptions or beliefs, are you confident that you are smart enough to make changes? Mindset shapes your behavior.
Take responsibility for what is happening around you and stopping blaming people.
Deploy your actions that are relevant to your intentions; an example is challenging yourself to do the things that you are not able to such as waking up early, push-up challenge, fasting, mindfulness meditation among others.
When we push our minds, we engage the emotional part.
Emotional
It is the relationship between self-awareness and emotional self-management. Emotional mastery is the ability to identify and recognize emotions, have the understanding of the cause of the feeling and acting appropriately.
It is the window to emotional self-control, openness, adaptability, communication, appreciation of others opinions, accepting responsibility, focus, resolving conflicts and cultivating good relations.
Components of emotional intelligence;
? Perceiving emotions
? Managing and reasoning with feelings.
? Understanding emotions.
It is not easy to tame emotions, however; with the above approaches, you will be able to handle them better.
Spiritual
It is the coordination of body, mind and soul and allowing our reasoning to have the basis of some faith. Think of it as a committee of three; body, mind and soul. The brain has the freedom to do what it wants, for example, it decides to work and makes the body to get up; the body may object or embraces what the mind is initiating. The soul gives you the consciousness of the impacts of what you are about to do and most often follows the spirit which has the basis of some kind of belief.
Thus, spiritual self-mastery is ignoring or controlling the needs of the body and following the leads of the spirit.
Its components are;
? Soul
? Values
? Purpose
? Personal awareness
What self-mastery requires
? Knowledge
? Practice
? Learning
? Courage
? Self-love
? Ownership
? Open heart and mind
? Free spirit
? Awareness
? Dedication and self-discipline
Benefits of self-mastery
It will help you to develop habits, attitudes and beliefs that will enable you to live life to the fullest in the present moment and allow for the feeling of love, fulfillment, happiness, joy and gratitude.
Self-mastery is the meaning of this famous quote;
“Watch your thoughts, they become words;
watch your words; they become actions;
watch your actions; they become habits;
watch your habits; they become character;
watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
