Self-leadership: The Key to Unlocking Career Success for Senior Professionals

As a senior leader. you've likely achieved a great deal in your career, however despite your many successes you may feel like you've hit a wall.

Maybe you feel stuck in your current role, doubt your professional success, or are just feeling drained. Overall you're unsure of what to do next or how to take your career to the next level.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. I've worked with 100s of senior leaders that feel off in their current role and crave something greater. It's natural and tends to occur because you spend so much of your time leading others, and doing the work, that you haven't taken the time to lead yourself.

When was the last time you had a 1:1 with yourself about your career?

If you don't set aside time for career development, you will feel stuck. Self-leadership is the process of taking control of your own career development and success. It encompasses the fact that you are accountable and empowered to create your own career.

At its core, self-leadership is about having clarity, confidence, and control in your career and personal life.

The Pillars of Self-Leadership: Clarity, Confidence, and Control

  1. Clarity: The first pillar of self-leadership is clarity. This involves having a clear understanding of your values, strengths, skills, and goals. Clarity means knowing what you want to achieve in your career and having a plan in place to get there. It also means understanding what motivates you, what inspires you, and what you're passionate about.
  2. Confidence: The second pillar of self-leadership is confidence. This involves having a strong belief in yourself and your abilities. Confidence means trusting in your own judgment, taking risks (understanding that they aren't really risks because you believe in yourself), and stepping outside of your comfort zone. It also means accepting that you may not know all the answers, but having the courage to seek out the help and advice you need to succeed.
  3. Control: The final pillar of self-leadership is control. This involves taking ownership of your own career and personal development. Control means setting boundaries, prioritizing your time and energy (especially your relationships), and making decisions that align with your values and goals. It also means being proactive and taking steps to create the career and life you want, rather than just waiting for opportunities to come to you.

As a senior professional, you have a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon. By embracing self-leadership, you can tap into this experience and knowledge to take your career to the next level. If you're wondering how to get started here are a few steps you can take:

  1. Clarity: Reflect on your values, strengths, skills, and goals. What motivates you? What inspires you? What do you want to achieve in your career and personal life?
  2. Confidence: Take ownership of skills that relate to your goals and career vision. This may involve seeking out mentors, courses, and other resources that invest in your professional growth.
  3. Control: Set boundaries and prioritize your time and energy. Make sure you're focusing on what's most important to you, including the people you are spending time with.

If you feel stuck or uncertain about your future, it's time to explore the concept of self-leadership, and take greater ownership for where you are, and where you are going.

Be the leader that you are for others and you will be the most important leader in your career. You deserve it.
