Self Isolation is Our Business
The world in the age of Coronavirus has changed for so many people. The simple process of making one’s way to work has been shattered by the pandemic. Voice actors used to bouncing around Soho studios are now being forced to work from home. A labyrinth of social media forums has popped up explaining how to set up home recording facilities. This is expensive and stressful and not a little bit daunting. But for voice actors who have well established home studios, little has changed…Because self-isolation is our business.
They tell us that close social contact is dangerous right now. And it is. We need to supress community transmission of the virus, so we need to keep our distance. For actors used to working in big casts on west end stages this is a strange time. Facebook live has become a place to show off one’s talents from miles away. These casts can no longer work together directly, and the ghost light now burns across London. But for those of us who narrate audiobooks and play all the characters on our own, little has changed…Because self-isolation is our business.
Face to face meetings used to make the world go round. They say 90% of all business deals are done on the golf course. Covid-19 has changed that for now, maybe forever. Face to face contact is now too risky. So, Zoom has…err…zoomed to the rescue. Virtual meetings have become the new normal and the world is sort of turning again. People are getting used to doing business with people they don’t actually meet. But for the home studio voice over artist who has never met anyone they work for in person, little has changed…Because self-isolation is our business.
