Self-help Advice from ChatGPT

Self-help Advice from ChatGPT

Michael Watkins Conversation with ChatGPT about Self-help Advice – December 10-11, 2022?

There is a vast literature about “self-help.” I (Michael) have long wondered about whether there are a core set of ideas that underpin all that work. So, I decided to explore this using the ChatGPT system recently released by Open AI.

In what you will read below, I only provided the queries, which are bolded and italicized. Everything else was produced by ChatGPT. In two instances I combined the results of two queries where I followed up a "What are the best ways..." with "Are there other good ways.." and combined the results. Otherwise the results are unedited other than formatting. I simply copied and pasted the results of queries. I also added section titles to make the results easier to consume.

I started with questions about ChatGPT itself, and then a general question about the self-help literature. I then asked follow-on questions about each of the key self-help ideas that ChatGPT identified.

I also asked the ChatGPT to generate short stories to illustrate key ideas. After the first few stories, it became clear that the system was using similar approaches for generating them, for example someone would read an article or go to a lecture and that would trigger a change or realization. So, I tried to further constrain the system’s story telling with interesting results.

Query: What are you?

I am Assistant, a large language model trained by OpenAI. I am a machine learning system designed to generate human-like text based on the input that I receive. I do not have consciousness or the ability to think or feel like a human. I am simply a tool that can help people with language-related tasks.

Query: How were you trained?

I was trained using a technique called deep learning, which involves feeding a large amount of text data to a neural network and training it to generate text that is similar to the input data. This process allows the model to learn the patterns and structures of human language, and to generate text that is similar in style and content to the input data.

Query: How much text data was fed to you?

As a large language model, I was trained on a massive amount of text data. The exact amount of data used to train me is not available, as I am a commercial product and this information is proprietary. However, it is safe to say that I was trained on a very large amount of text data, which allows me to generate high-quality and human-like text.

She also made a to-do list for each day, breaking down her tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks. This helped her stay focused and avoid getting overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work she had to do.

Next, Sarah learned to be more disciplined with her time. She set aside specific blocks of time for each task, and she made sure to stick to her schedule as much as possible. This helped her avoid getting sidetracked by distractions and ensured that she was making the most of her time.

Finally, Sarah learned to be more flexible with her time. She realized that things don't always go according to plan, and she learned to adjust her schedule and priorities as needed. This helped her stay calm and focused, even when faced with unexpected challenges.

Over time, Sarah's newfound time-management skills paid off. She became more productive and efficient, and she felt less stressed and overwhelmed. She was proud of herself for taking the initiative to learn how to manage her time and priorities without relying on outside resources. And she was grateful for the positive changes it had brought to her life.

I copied your article into ChatGPT and asked how I should comment. I was pleased that an error message occurred! Curious to know how you would envision using ChatGPT for any books you write in the future?

Fascinating stuff. Would be perfect for athletes and coaches at postgame press conferences... and probably politicians as well. They could be fed the answers in an earpiece and simply repeat out loud. My other thought is, since apparently chatGPT does not utilize footnotes - what happens if you ask it: "is what you do considered plagiarism?"
