Self-esteem and self-confidence in your professional life

Self-esteem and self-confidence in your professional life

Being able to rate how you feel about both your self-esteem and self-confidence in your professional world (and life in general) is super important for productivity and general happiness! Here we’ll cover some definitions, challenges and how you can check in with yourself in a simple exercise. In this video I unpack the distinctions a bit more.

Self-confidence

The definition here is “a feeling of trust in one’s abilities, qualities, and judgement”. It’s basically to both know and trust in your ability to do something. For most people this is built on your achievements/proof or what you are able to do.

There are many areas where people experience challenges in their career and self-confidence. Some examples include:

Self-esteem

The definition for this one is “confidence in one’s own worth or abilities; self-respect“. Essentially it’s how much you value, appreciate and like yourself. This is built on your inward reflection and how worthy you feel that you are to have success and happiness in your life. It’s mostly based on who (you feel that) you are.

Common career related challenges involving self-esteem are:

  • Feeling like a fraud/ fear of being found out (you can check out my video here for more around these fears).
  • Pretending to be fine when you do need help. Remember that asking for help is a true strength, not a weakness at all!

Quick self check-in

This simple exercise can help you check in on both your self-esteem and self-confidence. Simply grab a piece of paper or blank document to get started.

  1. Rank your self-esteem from 1-10 for your (1=low, 10=high). Base this on how you are feeling this month/week in general, not just in relation to your career or job.
  2. Rank your self-confidence from 1-10 for your (1=low, 10=high) :
  • Current role (or interview skills if you’re not working/looking for a job)
  • A role in your past you did not enjoy (try and remember how it felt)
  • A role in your past you did enjoy (try and remember how it felt)
  • Your favourite hobby/craft
