Self-Doubt Does Nothing For Your Complexion.

Hi! My name is Parissa. This is "Modern Badass: A Field Guide", a place for Modern Badasses to feel seen, heard, understood and respected. And, it's also a place for others to crack the code on the Modern Badasses in their lives (and maybe learn some badassery themselves). Want to receive this 2x/month? Hit the "subscribe" button above.
"Argue for your limitations and, sure enough, they're yours." That nugget is from Richard Bach.
Self-doubt. Inferiority. Uncertainty. Impostor Syndrome. All of them can be a matter of choice, whether allowing someone to put the thoughts in your head or allowing the negative, self-talking version of you that lives rent-free in your Modern Badass noggin to do the job.
For all of your badassery, self-doubt is most definitely one of 14?traits?I've identified in all things Modern Badassery. Inasmuch as you are one of the smartest, most creative people, you still wonder when people are going to find out you're not the real deal. It's excruciatingly painful.
Being a "hardoholic" isn't a good look for you.
Good word, right? My brilliant friend Mandy Lehto, host of the brilliant Enough, The Podcast, called herself a "hardoholic" on a Zoom call and it knocked the wind out of me. I took it to mean that if an accomplishment wasn't hard (or near impossible) for her, she devalued it.
I'm looking at you, Modern Badass Leader.
How many times have you done the near impossible (or impossible for that matter) and you've dismissed it almost immediately after? You didn't take time to celebrate you, your gift and your impact because you suffer from self-doubt. After all, if you could do it, it must not mean that much.
In minimizing it, you diminished your power and devalued your impact on others. You hid your light behind a bushel so that no one could see it, least of all you.
The belief you're failing isn't your color.
Last year, I was studying a new tool to bring into my advisory and coaching practice. As with anything new, I was super green at the beginning and was like that for a long while. That's just how training goes.
My training was being recorded for my review and to provide the basis for getting feedback. Objective, reasonable and supportive, right? You'd think I'd understand that.

I frequently went into an anxiety spiral with "I'm failing!" on constant repeat in my head. Why? I would get emails with a recording attached that said, "...please watch and listen to the first part that you led in advance."
There's nothing in those emails that would suggest I was an F student. But, I went there. And, doing that was such an attention and energy vampire.
I'm looking at you, Modern Badass Leader.
You're so used to being at the top of your game all the time. You've got arsenal, armor and attitude galore to do ANYTHING you want. And, between us, it's not bragging if you told us your list of accomplishments. Because they're all true. But, the times when you don't have the most knowledge and you're feeling vulnerable? Brutal. "Fake it 'til you make it" only goes so far. Self-doubt is a killer.
I believe in you.
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.†—Eleanor Roosevelt
No one will advocate for your vision, no matter how audacious, more than you will. The more you allow self-doubt, the more it will diminish your power. I believe in you. But that has nothing to do with the price of gold. Do you believe in yourself?

3 å¹´Wonderful post. Self-doubt is a heavy weight to drag around. A little bit keeps us grounded, but most of us overshoot.
