Self-development is inspirational
“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world - that is the myth of the atomic age - as in being able to remake ourselves.”
--Mahatma Gandhi
This quote by Gandhi is very true, if you can’t change your environment, change yourself for the good. Accept the things you can’t change. Adapt and equip yourself. If you see what is the best form of appraisal, its self-appraisal, what is the best form of motivation, its self-motivation, what is the best form of investment, its self-investment (invest in yourself). Similarly if you check what is the best form of development, its self-development. Because in self-development you take initiative yourself and nothing is imposed on you.
You should be open to new thoughts, new people, new principles, new ideas, and new experiences; "new" makes us grow. You should look at anything which is new and good; and accept it for your self-development. Yes, you are a graduate with PhD. But when was the last time you chased after a book shop to buy and read a book at your own volition to obtain information for your self-development? Knowledge doesn't chase people; people chase knowledge and information.
Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, wishes. Who looks inside, finds infinite wisdom. Whenever a time arises where clarity is desired, it is always wise to reflect on the sage within. Insight and intuition are the most important thing for self-development. Many of the most profound discoveries were reported to have come through intuition rather than sequential analysis processed by linguistic understanding. Intuition is direct knowing or sensing that is beyond usual thought and use of senses.
Criticism gives you feedback for your improvement. Take criticism positively and change yourself, this is the first step of self-development. Ask for feed-back.
Write a letter to your future self: What do you see yourself as 5 years from now? Will you be the same? Different? What kind of person will you be? Write a letter to your future self – 1 year from now will be a good start – and seal it. Mark a date in your calendar to open it 1 year from now. Then start working to become the person you want to open that letter.
Learn from people who inspire you. Think about people you admire, people who inspire you. These people reflect certain qualities you want to have for yourself too. What are the qualities in them which you want to have for yourself? How can you acquire these qualities? Get a mentor or coach. There’s no faster way to improve than to have someone work with you on your goals. Some people make it a point to read at least one personal development article every day, which is a great habit. We would like to conclude with another quote from Mahatma Gandhi.
“Be the change you want to see in this world”
