Self-Compassion for Better Leadership

What is #selfcompassion? This question may pop up in our minds, especially regarding leadership #training. Most of the time, we are so focused on management tools and skills that we fail to appreciate the importance of mindfulness and self-care. Think of those tough times when you encounter pain or criticism. Are you capable of being warm towards yourself? If yes, then pat your back as you are on the right track. If not, think of developing this feeling of kindness towards yourself.

Extensive research on self-compassion shows that its benefits align with several essential leadership skills like compassion towards others, emotional intelligence, resilience, growth mindset, and integrity.

"Self-compassion and compassion for others are linked… Being kind and nonjudgmental toward the self is good practice for treating others compassionately."
Serena Chen

People who exercise self-compassion can maintain calm better when flustered, thus exhibiting higher #EQ. #emotionalintelligence or emotional quotient (EQ) is the ability to understand and use your emotions positively and manage stress and relationships better. People with high EQ communicate better and diffuse conflicts far more effectively.

Self-compassion helps you build psychological #resilience as you are kinder towards yourself when faced with setbacks and low times. It enables you to navigate the mist of self-doubt during setbacks, regain clarity and step on the path of productivity.

A #growthmindset believes that talent and capability can be developed with practice and effort over time. Self-compassion helps you to be better oriented towards personal growth. You like to invest in yourself, which produces positive outcomes for your personal and professional achievements.

Also, self-compassion builds #integrity. Research studies provide evidence that self-compassionate people are also conscientious and accountable. The feeling of compassion, either towards yourself or others, makes you kind, and kindness helps you be aware of the pain that your or others feel. This, coupled with compassion, nudges you towards doing the right things.

Leadership skills should include the ability of self-compassion, and leadership training must focus on sensitizing the managers on its merits. Given below are some additional reading resources:
