Self-Care is NOT Selfish

Self-Care is NOT Selfish

Worry, stress, anxiety, all have negative effects on our physical and mental energy. Mental stress or anxiety will flood our bodies with chemicals and hormones which can weaken our immune system, leaving us more vulnerable to viral infections and frequent illnesses.

As women we tend to be taking care of others, but no one can drink from an empty cup.

So, at all times but more so at times of stress, we will make self-care our number one priority.

  • Take a time-out with long luxurious baths, or practice yoga, mindfulness, meditation, or qigong (all amazing for relaxation).
  • Listen to music - work on your perfect playlist (just make it fun not too sad).
  • Eat well - especially focus on fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Drink more water - it’s good for us and flushes out those negative toxins.
  • Drink less alcohol and caffeine – in moderation these are ok but in excess they can aggravate anxiety.
  • Get enough sleep - when we are stressed, our bodies need more sleep. So early to bed with a good book or a relaxation tape.
  • Exercise daily - choose something fun, that you can do at home or with a family member (walking, running, gardening, trampolining, skipping). There are also some amazing 10-minute workouts on just about everything on You-tube. Remember regular exercise combats depression and anxiety, improves our mood, and helps us to maintain our physical and mental health and balance.
  • Breathe. Take deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. Again, and again.
  • Be careful who you speak to. Avoid conversations with negative people.
  • Laugh much as you can. Try switching from the news to your favourite comedy show.

Self-care is not selfish.
