What is self-care?

Self-care resonates with taking care of your overall health and well-being. Looking after your body, mind, and emotions. To be healthy inside and out.

Self-care practices for nurses can range from having a skin-care routine to listening to calm music. It involves things you would love to do and makes you feel good and productive.?

Nursing and self-care go hand-in-hand. Nurses deal with many daily challenges, from nurse night shift to taking care of difficult people.

But according to the American Nurses Association Health Risk Appraisal, 68% of the surveyed nurses place their patients’ health, safety, and wellness before their own. 68! It is time to change these statistics.?

They also suggested that nurses give the best patient care when operating at the peak of their wellness! So practicing self-care is a win-win situation for your health & career.

The Day shifts

Self-care before, during, and after a day shift is vital to keep you fresh and active throughout the day and less exhausted at the end of the day.?

So here is the tip, take little steps and go with the flow. Take your time to set the goals that work for you and fit easily into your lifestyle because self-care will vary from nurse to nurse.

Try out any of these things to get you started:?

  • Spend time with your loved ones or give them a call since you were out working the whole day.
  • Wash your face with cold water during breaks.
  • Eat something nutritious while listening to a podcast.
  • Get in comfy pajamas, light some candles, and do your skin care.?
  • Get all the necessary rest and sleep that your body deserves.?

The Night Shifts

Mistakes to avoid

Achieving the perfect self-care routine as a nurse can become overwhelming. Here are a few mistakes you should avoid.?

Not Planning- Try to plan and set boundaries for your schedule. Prioritize your self-care over other things which drain your energy.?

Imitating-What works for others may not work for you. Look for inspiration and include self-care in your nursing life like a missing puzzle.?

Being hard on yourself- If you cannot follow up on your schedule, that is okay. Make self-care fun and stress-free. After all, that is the entire point of practicing self-care.?
