Self Care Fridays – A Healthy Diet Leads to a Growing Practice

One key to a successful, growing practice is the ability to make wise decisions and to be productive. One way to achieve these daily goals is to maintain a healthy diet. However, that is no easy feat these days when we’re constantly bombarded with ads and information about all the different menu plans and ways of eating. However, one common denominator in all of these health plans is to eat organic, whole foods in their most natural state.

In the simplest of terms, avoid all the center aisles of the grocery store where the prepackaged foods are found. I know that can do tough to do especially if you have children along with you! But the freshest choices will be found in the produce, seafood, and meat sections of your local grocery store. If you’re still tempted to buy a box of something because it’s convenient, read the ingredient label first. If you can pronounce all the ingredients and there are a small number of ingredients listed, it’s a smart choice. Anything that you can’t pronounce is likely a chemical which has no business being ingested.

Ditch the Carb Coma Lunches

You know that carb coma we all fall into after a particularly big dinner? Not a good thing on a regular work day. Overloading on carbs can make you feel sleepy, which will zap your energy and limit your decision-making ability. Instead of grabbing high carb lunches, choose lunches that have more protein and fewer carbs. For instance, a salad with chicken, turkey, or salmon is a better choice than a greasy burger and fries at the fast food joint. If you add some avocado to that healthy salad, the good fats in the avocado will help you feel full but will also give you brain power to have a productive afternoon.

One note: even fruits and vegetables have carbohydrates in them but they are still whole foods that your body can digest easily. So don’t get freaked about having a salad and still ingesting carbs. The simple carbs, such as breads, cereals, baked goods, and anything loaded with sugar are what’s bad for your body, your blood sugar, your weight, and your business mind.

Is Buying Organic Worth the Increased Price?

Many people argue that it’s too expensive to buy organic produce or grass-fed meats, even though the health benefits are many. When it comes to budgeting, it’s all too easy to opt for the cheaper options.

However, some produce have higher concentrations of pesticides than others, which obviously can cause harm to our bodies over many years. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) creates an updated list every year of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15, which are foods that have the highest and lowest concentrations of pesticides, respectively. If you’re on a limited budget, take a look at the Dirty Dozen list and buy organic versions of these foods.

Stimulate Your Brain with Daily Exercise

One way to clear your mind while also relaxing the rest of your body is to exercise daily. It doesn’t have to be an hour at the gym; you can simply go for walks during your day, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or do some yoga stretches before the kids wake up. Exercising increases your flexibility, lowers your chances of injury and also improves your productivity.
