Self-blame derailed my first board role and helped me find my leadership style.

My first board level role was a big leap.
I had about 40% of the experience I needed.
?
So we put in place a plan for mentoring and support.
?
I made the leap.
With a healthy dose of imposter syndrome.
And a gut feel that it was a good move.
?
Guess what?
?
The mentoring support didn't work out the way we planned.
?
I panicked.
Instead of pivoting.
Or finding other ways to get help.
I did the stuff I was good at.
Avoided the stuff I feared.
I went small.
?
Buried underneath this.
I was being hard on myself.
Expecting myself to be able to 'just do it'.
Petrified of failing.
Frozen.
?
I see it a lot in my female coaching clients.
Beating themselves up.
Over things which have little or nothing to do with them.
?
When we work on this together.
There’s a moment of recognition when they see how hard they’re being on themselves.
Compassion when they understand the hindering belief.
The aha moments when they start moving towards it.
Huge shifts when their inner saboteurs shrink.
?
It was the same for me.
I did my work.
Learned lessons.
And turned it around.
?
And I discovered the leader I wanted and knew myself to be.
?
