SELF-BELIEF — THE CORNERSTONE OF GREATNESS

A couple of years ago, I was at a point in my career where I needed to make a pivotal move. I had envisioned and prepared for this move but when the time came, I felt I wasn’t ready for it. After many days of deliberating and praying about it, I decided to speak to one of my mentors about my uneasiness. We agreed to meet over coffee. After hearing me out, she was quiet for what seemed like eternity. Then, suddenly, as if on cue, she looked me in the eyes and said ‘ Believe’

She continued “ Kwasi, self-belief is the cornerstone of greatness. It is one of the most important tools you need in your arsenal as a leader”. 

With those words, she smiled, finished her cup of coffee and left me pondering, replaying her words in my mind for a few minutes. Then suddenly, my mood lightened and I felt a smile break out on the side of my lips.

The next day, I accepted the move!

A few years down the line, I couldn’t be happier about making that decision. But when I look back I always remember that brief moment of pondering over what my mentor had said and how that has contributed significantly to building my confidence and belief in myself. The belief that I can accomplish absolutely any ambition I set for myself. That moment of developing self-belief has served me extremely well over the years — in my career, my personal life and my journey as an entrepreneur. 

In my travels across the continent, I have come to the sad realisation that one of the few things that hold young people back from achieving more for themselves and the continent is a general lack of self-belief. We doubt ourselves and our capacity to do great things. But we can change that narrative by simply believing.

The late Roy T Benneth, Author of the Light in the Heart said “ Believe in your infinite potential. Your only limitations are those you set upon yourself.” 

What is holding you back today? Just believe!
