Self-Awareness: Know thyself, grow thyself

Self-Awareness: Know thyself, grow thyself

Hello, Mental Wealth Seekers!

Last week, we took a deep dive into "How to Build Your Personal Stress Management Toolkit." We explored how essential it is to create a customized set of tools to help you navigate life’s challenges, like a tailor-made safety net to catch you when stress hits hard. We talked about techniques like mindful breathing, setting boundaries, and finding your "calm corner"—your personal space for mental resets. I loved hearing how some of you are already creating your kits and making stress more manageable! If you missed it, no worries—you can catch up right here.

This week, we’re shifting gears and getting even more personal. Let me ask you this:

"Who are you when no one’s watching?"

Today, we're unlocking the door to Self-Awareness – the silent superpower that has the potential to change everything.

A few years ago, I worked with a high-achieving client named Sarah. Sarah had it all on the surface—an executive title, a great family, and a lifestyle most would envy. But inside, she was struggling. She felt disconnected from her work, overwhelmed at home, and, in her words, “going through the motions without any real direction.” Sound familiar?

One day during our coaching session, I asked Sarah, “When was the last time you checked in with yourself?”

She looked at me, confused. “What do you mean?”

I smiled. “I mean, when was the last time you truly paid attention to how you feel, what you need, and what drives you?”

She realized that in all the busyness of her life, she had completely lost touch with herself. Sarah had spent so much time meeting external demands that she never paused to consider what was going on internally.

That’s where Self-Awareness comes in.

Self-awareness is like holding up a mirror to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. It allows you to see yourself clearly, understand what’s really driving your actions, and make adjustments to live a life that aligns with your true self.

For Sarah, this was a game changer. Over the next few weeks, we worked on simple daily habits to reconnect her with her inner self. She began journaling, checking in with her emotions, and asking herself deeper questions like, “What do I really want out of this day?”

The results were nothing short of amazing. Sarah became more intentional in her work and her relationships. She stopped saying “yes” to everything and learned to prioritize what truly mattered. She found more joy and fulfillment, simply by getting to know herself again.

Now, It’s Your Turn:

Here’s how you can start building your own Self-Awareness Toolkit:

  1. Daily Check-ins: Take a few minutes each day to pause and ask yourself, “How am I feeling right now? What do I need?” The more often you check in, the more in tune you become with your internal world.
  2. Journaling: Write down your thoughts and emotions. This isn’t just about recording your day—it’s about reflecting on what’s happening inside. Over time, you’ll start to notice patterns that reveal so much about who you are and what you need.
  3. Mindful Moments: Be present. Whether it’s during a walk, your morning coffee, or even while brushing your teeth—bring your attention fully to the moment. This simple act strengthens your connection with your inner self.
  4. Feedback Loop: Ask trusted friends or colleagues for honest feedback. Sometimes, others can see things in us that we miss. Use this feedback to deepen your self-understanding.
  5. Evaluate Your Triggers: Pay attention to what makes you react emotionally—both positively and negatively. What makes you anxious? What lights you up? These emotional cues are your inner compass, pointing you toward what matters most.

As you continue on your mental wealth journey, remember: Self-awareness is not a destination; it’s a practice. The more you explore, the more you discover about yourself—and the more empowered you become to live authentically, with purpose and clarity.

So this week, make it your mission to "Know Yourself, Grow Yourself!" Because when you understand who you are, you unlock the true potential for lasting happiness and success.

Here’s to uncovering the real you!
