Self Awareness is key

People have talked a lot about mental health awareness this week and there are lots of articles and posts discussing one of the issues currently facing us as Lockdown continues.

That issue is how business leaders are building and maintaining their resilience over time. In my article ‘Resilience-A Reflection of Human Strength’ I outlined 10 key tips for leaders to consider.

Point 8 is “Self Awareness is key - In any environment it’s those who are most self-aware that have the most followers! Leadership is about two things: leading from the front and generating ‘followership’. Having an awareness of how you ‘are’, how you feel and how you react is key. Self-awareness leads to a greater authentic leadership style and at times like these true authenticity is needed. That’s the reason people will follow along with decision that are made. Self-awareness and authenticity are underpinned by a sense of purpose. If the leader’s, and the business’s, purpose is just to make money irrespective of the situation that will overshadow all that they do. At this time, more than ever business purpose must be greater than just profit. Yes, we all must make money to survive, but those who will thrive will be those who recognise that community and social purpose really come from the heart and that’s what’s needed right now.”.

So, please take time now, as a business leader… and a fellow human being… to reflect on how you feel right now. It’s only when we are in tune with our feelings that we can truly connect with others. And ultimately that’s what leads to greater alignment in business and that helps us all!

The first question to ask is... "how do I lead myself?" - And as you rightly say true leadership comes from the heart (and gut) and not from the head. The problem comes from the western world and the predominance for using the head brain (a thinking and creative tool). The heart is 'the emperor' and is where true leadership comes from in everyday life, it is the centre of compassion. And the gut then supports with identity, intuition and instinct. In mbraining we coach around 'full body awareness', encouraging people to get our of their head and into their body... all I can say from personal experience is... it is a 'different level' way of living, being and showing up. When you tap into your 'electromagnetic' power you operate from a beautifully human place... It's the head brain that got us all into this mess - and the heart and gut which will show us the way out. ?? ?? ??

Great article and very timely, Philip. Self awareness and (for me at least) listening quietly to my own thoughts and others is key.

"Having an awareness of how you react is key" - well said Philip, that's massively important.
