Selecting your technology solution

Imagine hiring a contractor to renovate your home, but you're not shown any designs or plans until the construction is finished. You'd never agree to that!

Don't select your technology solution in this way, don't say, "I need a customer Relationship Management Solution" - be sure to know what you need of it AND what you need it for!

Digital solutions, even within one category differ significantly. Meaning, they may not be fit-for-purpose for your organisation. Solutions may:

  • Have a greater level of functionality than you require - you may be paying too much
  • May not meet all of your needs - you won't achieve your desired outcomes

Alternatively, your business may not be setup to make the most out of a solution, this may be because:

  • Business processes require refinement
  • Data may be unstructured and require remediation before integrating / implementing into a new technology environment
  • People within your team may not have the technical capabilities o appropriately utilise the selected technology.

So how do you ensure you do not make those errors as an organisation?

For your technology, it is important to understand:

  • What are the functions you perform?
  • What of those functions you would like integrated into your future solution - determining your functional requirements
  • What is the gap between where you are today and where you would like to get, and how do you close that gap? This may include changes in business processes, data remediation etc.

Once you have performed these steps, you can determine what solutions meet your needs. Whether that be buying an off the shelf solution or engaging an organisation to build a solution. Importantly, you can also work out how your organisation gets ready for the technology change.
