Seeking Help/Advice
Hope all of you are having a happy holiday. I'm unfortunately having a rough go at it, and wanted to reach out to see if anyone has any experience with this type of situation or ideas on how to move forward.
Last year I was living in Miami and working remote when I was laid off of a Senior Dev job for a company out of NYC. I took my remaining savings and planned a road trip across the US to LA, with plans to head back home through AZ/NM.
Home has always been a negative experience and I was delaying it as much as possible, but miscalculated and was stranded in LA (the trip was about a month long). I reached out to my parents for help and they told me to figure it out (I made attempts in the past to separate myself from them because I had witnessed and experienced behavior that I believed would at some point interfere with my professional and personal life). My parents are not exactly middle class-- they have luxury and secondary vehicles, live in a nice home, vacation, etc.
They told me to figure it out and I ended up selling all of my belongings (all of my tech devices and nice clothes) and lived in my car on skid row (using the homeless facilities for food/shower) for a week before they reached back out and offered gas money to get home.
They sent enough money for gas to make it just into Texas (I slept in my car on the way-- not hotels) and when I told them I needed enough to make it all the way home, it turned into another argument and they refused. I was lucky enough to be near a travel center in the middle of nowhere, and the woman at the info desk suggested I ask for work/room at a nearby ranch. I worked for a day, slept for free, and he gave me enough money to continue driving.
It was an extreme experience but not a complete surprise. When I got to Austin, I continued sleeping out of my car.. there were some major arguments over text message that included my entire family but eventually my grandfather cleared out a room for me to stay in and I moved home.
The day after I arrived my mother showed up, pretending like nothing happened, and tried to feed me what was normally my favorite meal, but was mixed in with what I could only imagine was literal dog sh** (she brought it over in a pyrex). I had to open both the front door and the kitchen door-- the stink was unimaginable and a very deliberate attempt for her to show me where we stood. I declined and decided I was better off sleeping in my car in Austin where I could door dash until figuring something else out.
It ruined my plans for finding another dev job because the salary I was working for meant that employers were expecting applicants with a certain level of stability. It was a terrible experience. I slept in parking lots at public parks and showered at a public pool. Eventually, I went to Instagram and shared my story (I was otherwise very embarrassed and had zero help from any family), and I believe it led to my father losing his job working for the school district.
Nothing else came of sharing my story and once my car was repossessed (it was a new 2022 BMW that I took a car loan on-- the same one I was living out of) I moved into a homeless shelter. I was there for six months.. I took the bus to the mall where I was working part-time unpacking boxes for a clothing retailer. A totally unbelievable experience.
I never got a single text message or call from anyone in my family while I was there (literally, anyone). Thanksgiving, Christmas and my birthday passed without any communication from anyone. In fact, I even saw my parents drive by on my path from the bus to the shelter and just looked forward the entire time.
I had been harassed in my bunk by other guys (people would grab me from the bottom bunk and I caught a guy cutting my hair in my sleep) and decided I would have to move home. I asked my grandmother about moving into her spare bedroom (which before then was occupied) and spent my last $4 on a bus ticket home.
I unfortunately arrived to a very hostile environment. The second day that I was here, the deputies came into the house and told me I had to be taken for a psychiatric evaluation. I have never had mental issues and in fact, always made attempts to keep a distance from my parents because I knew (based on experience) that there were problems. I made no fuss and after the evaluation I was allowed back home (of course).

Suffice it to say that my parents have spared practically no expense to make it as difficult as possible to leave. Apparently, they installed a device that emits a high-frequency pitch which has somehow increased in intensity over the last 6 months (likely in the wall-- I see patches that weren't there when I lived here previously and there are paint cans and supplies in the shed).
It's only on when I'm here (half the day-- I still door dash and my grandmother, whose car I use, works during the day) and it has resulted in what I assume is permanent tinnitus in my left ear. My parents are also somewhat connected in this town, and I've been continually harassed by people when I'm driving-- they turn their bright lights on when I pass, drive extremely close behind or extremely slow in front, I get boxed in, etc.).
Needless to say, it's become completely criminal. I figured they would get bored at some point, but I assume that because I haven't done anything completely crazy, they will continue to push until I do.
It's definitely been a very unique experience. The entire family has totally ignored me and my grandmother's home, which used to be filled with people throughout the week and weekends without exception, has not been visited by a single person over 6 months (another game, presumably).
I tried enlisting in the military, but never received a callback after I told there would be a background check. I've always have a spotless past (it's how I was able to secure roles with certain salaries) so I assume that all kinds of false reports or otherwise have been made on my name.
If you know anyone with experience on being targeted by family or have any other ideas, I would appreciate the help. If you know someone that is hiring, I would love to share my resume. I'll leave my contact information below. If I do not respond, please do not hesitate to make repeated attempts on the same or different channels. Thank you.
