Seek Help - 14th Edition

I've been keeping busy the past few weeks, getting all of my ducks in a row and restructuring my businesses. As I'm in this building phase it feels like I'm getting things done but the progress feels slow at times. Sometimes my neurodivergency has me putting off simple tasks with overthinking and since I don't have time for that right now, here's what I've been doing if I feel stuck.

Seek Learning

Someone recommended David Parker and his book? The More You Do, The Better You Feel.?He called his system the Just One Thing or J.O.T. Method.

Here's how it works:

  • Take a pen or pencil and turn to a blank page of a notebook.
  • Write today's date in the upper left-hand corner.
  • Think of one simple task that you've been putting off. Write it down underneath the date.
  • Do that task and only that task. Don't write out a to-do list. It's easy to let yourself get distracted by all of the other undone tasks you aren't doing. Just do the one thing you wrote down.
  • Once it's done, draw a thin line through the task so that you can still read it, but you know it's complete.
  • Repeat steps 3-5.
  • At the end of the day, you'll end up with a crossed off list of accomplishments.

This is one of my best ways to get unstuck!! I'm working on this now while I body double with a friend in Studyverse .

Seek Doing

When I was at SXSW I went to the Axios house and got to hear this convo between Eleanor Hawkins & LinkedIn VP Aneesh Raman and I really thought this moment was spot on for me a LinkedIn Creator.

In a recent LinkedIn Guide to Creating , they shared some thoughts on "How to Be Recognized as a Thought Leader on LinkedIn ". The ingredients for becoming a thought leader are a combination of expertise, visibility, and effective communication. Here are some strategies that can help you cook up what you know and serve it in impactful ways:

  • Create content that demonstrates your deep knowledge in a specific subject area or industry by providing valuable learnings, takeaways, or perspectives to those who follow you. (Like a #LinkedIn Newsletter or a Substack )
  • Produce high-quality content on a regular basis. Being consistent adds to your credibility and reliability, which can take you a long way in increasing your thought leadership. (This is why I'm droping content a few times each week).
  • If you’re someone who offers services, consider adding a service page/custom button to your profile to let others know about your professional skills. (Adding this to my todo list).

Another thing I've been working on is change your money mindset for the better!!! I grew up with some privilege and have never been highly motivated by money but I've realized that I need to shift how I approach money and earning if I want to be my greatest self. As I've been working on it, I came across an article from Teachable on Upgrade your money mindset and profit with ease by Nicole Quintana-Wolf . The four main points were (I suggest you read the article in full to get all the information):

1. Evaluate the value of your offer - “People will pay for something that is going to make their life easier or help them solve a problem,” Expert Kiersten Brown say “As a creator, our work focuses on that.”

2. Speak to your people - “You’re not going to sell a steak to vegetarians,” Brown says. “You can have the best product or service in the world, but if you’re selling to the wrong people, it’s not going to work.”

3. Observe enjoyment - “One of the reasons why you are a creator is because you love to create,” states Brown. “Find joy in the process and don’t get caught up miserably doing the tasks that you don’t want to do. Focus on creating, and get support where you can for all the work that needs to be done in between.”

4. Accept money with ease - Think about it: How many times have you refused something when it was offered to you? It could have been money, support, a helping hand. Even though it would have been helpful to receive, you said no to avoid seeming needy, greedy, or reliant. This mindset of being closed to receiving could also be because you did work that felt easy to you and there was guilt that came up around accepting payment. Perhaps it just “felt wrong” to receive money for that particular thing. You get to shift to a mindset of receiving with gratitude. If someone offers you something, you get to say yes, thank you, instead of no, followed by the reason why you don’t deserve what’s being offered. According to Brown, this can extend to any situation surrounding money. “Money is simply a reflection of how someone values your work,” she explains. “If someone values your work or even just your mere presence, let them pay you.”

Think it's definitely that last one for me, I'm often blocking my own blessings without realizing it by turning down money or not allowing people to properly value my work. Like everything we do in life, shifting your mindset is a practice and practices take time to create change.

Seek Nature

I don't know about you guys but I definitely geeked out about the eclipse and being somewhere with 80% coverage (so we didn't get pitch black but it definitely got dramatically darker). I went to the Martin Luther King Library downtown and got there right on time to get myself some glasses. While I was waiting I spotted my friends Chad and Poet who joined me in line so we all made it before they ran out.

Seek to Help Others

Typically I use this space to share someone else in need but I've had a lot going on so I need to put my own mask on and do a Roll Call on everything going on:

  • We The People DC had a rough patch that I'm not even really sure how to fully process but somehow I made it through. Getting ready to start hosting some business days on there to fund managing the account. I'm almost done getting everything reorganized, it's been a process but there are some exciting things coming down the pipeline.
  • I'm working on some merch for my brands which should be fun. Probably going to start with some stickers, water bottles, pens, maybe a fanny and a sweatshirt. Open to feedback!!
  • Comedy is my happy place and one of my favorite things right now.
  • I'm recording a podcast with Earl Wyatt that I think you're all going to really enjoy (more details soon!!).
  • DCFunemployment is getting ready to relaunch the interview series as well as some IG Lives soon which should be a lot of fun.
  • I've got room on the books for 3 new coaching clients (more details soon).
  • Been writing a book (which feels long overdue).
  • As It Happens is still dropping weekly happenings posts and event coverage.
  • Getting ready to bring my Lit and Other Things Podcast back at Eaton DC .
  • Reviving my Facebook group Connect & Create DMV for Networking and Opportunities in the DMV.
  • I'm loving sharing Seek Help. I really appreciate yall rocking with me!
  • I was inspired to write something else - Black & Neurospicy, my new Substack Newsletter.
